Sleep & Tired Emoji

😴 Sleeping face is the sleep emoji proper: closed eyes, a small snore-Z over the head, and it means "I'm asleep" or "I'm going to sleep now". 💤 Zzz is that snore on its own, three Z's rising like in a comic strip; its official Unicode name is Sleeping Symbol. Together, 😴💤 is the standard sign-off for the night, and a 💤 reply to a long message means "this is boring me to sleep".

The rest of the bedtime kit is literal: 🛌 person in bed and 🛏️ bed for "I'm in bed" or "staying in", 🧸 teddy bear for a cosy, childlike good night, 💭 thought balloon and ☁️ cloud for dreams, 🐑 ewe for counting sheep, 🕯️ candle and 🛋️ couch and lamp for winding down, and 🔕 bell with slash for do-not-disturb. 🌙 crescent moon with its sleepy-faced cousins 🌛 🌜 and the night scenes 🌃 🌌 🌠 set the hour. If what you want is the full good-night greeting with sunrises and hearts, that lives in the Good Morning & Good Night Emoji collection.

Tired emoji and exhausted emoji: which face says what

🥱 Yawning face is sleepy and bored at once: a hand over an open mouth, used for "long day", "this meeting" or simply "bedtime". 😪 Sleepy face is the one people misread as crying: the drop at the side of its nose is not a tear but the snot bubble that Japanese manga draws on a character who has dozed off. 🫩 Face with bags under eyes, new in 2024, is the honest one: dark circles, a flat mouth, the look of someone who slept four hours and is still at work. It has become the go-to for burnout, hangovers and new parents.

The two faces actually named tired and weary are louder. 😫 Tired face and 😩 Weary face both have scrunched eyes and an open wailing mouth; in practice they mean exhausted, overwhelmed or fed up more than sleepy, and 😩 doubles as "I can't take it" in a dramatic or even flirty way. 😮‍💨 face exhaling is the long sigh at the end of the day, 🫠 melting face is quietly falling apart, 😵‍💫 is dizzy with fatigue and 😵 is knocked out. For "dead tired" there is 💀 and the shuffling 🧟 zombie, and for brain fog 😶‍🌫️ or the blank stare of 😑. 🪫 Low battery says it without a face: drained, and 🔋 is you after a proper night's sleep.

Zzz text symbols: ᶻ 𝗓 𐰁 and other small Z's

When 💤 looks too loud, people write the snore with letters instead. The trio ᶻ 𝗓 𐰁, copied around TikTok and Instagram bios as a tiny fading "zzz", is three unrelated characters that happen to shrink in the right order: ᶻ is a phonetic modifier letter, 𝗓 is a sans-serif maths z and 𐰁 is a letter of the Old Turkic script from eighth-century Mongolia and Siberia. ᴢ (small capital), 𝓏 (script), 𝐳 𝘻 𝚣, fullwidth ｚ and circled ⓩ give you the same idea in other weights, so a username can end in ᶻᶻᶻ or 𝓏𝓏𝓏.

⏾ is the power sleep symbol, the crescent printed on a laptop's standby key, encoded in Unicode 9.0 in 2016 with the other power-button signs; it is the neatest one-character "sleep mode". ☾ ☽ are the old astronomical crescents, which sit well in a bio like ⋆｡˚ ☾ ᶻ 𝗓 𐰁. For a sleeping text face, close the eyes with ˘ ‾ ￣ ︶ ‿ ◡: (˘︶˘).｡*♡ or (￣o￣) zzZ, and the Korean 눈_눈 uses the syllable for "eye" as a pair of heavy-lidded eyes.

Sleep emoji meaning from a girl, a guy or a group chat

From a friend, 😴 or 💤 at the end of a conversation simply means they are off to bed; a reply of 💤 or 🥱 to something you said means it bored them. From a partner or crush, 😴 next to "wish you were here" or 🛌 with a heart is an invitation to keep talking at bedtime rather than a brush-off; 😩 can be dramatic tiredness or thirst depending on the sentence it follows, so read the words. 🫩 and 🪫 are usually a request for sympathy: "I'm running on nothing".

In a work chat, ☕😫 or 🫩☕ before a morning meeting reads as friendly self-mockery, while 💤 under a colleague's message reads as rude. For a child's bedtime, 🧸🌙 or 🐑💤 keep it soft. The small hours have their own emoji: 🕛 for midnight, 🕒 for the 3 am "still awake" message, 🦉 for the night owl who sent it, and ⏰☕🌅 for the morning after.

Sleepy animals and how the sleep emoji changed

🐨 Koala and 🦥 sloth stand in for anyone who could sleep all day: koalas really do sleep around 18 to 20 hours out of 24, digesting eucalyptus, and the sloth became the emoji of slow, lazy weekends as soon as it arrived in 2019. 🦉 Owl is the opposite type, awake and studying at 2 am.

😴 Sleeping face joined Unicode in version 6.1 in 2012, two years after 😪 💤 😫 😩 came over from the Japanese carrier emoji sets in Unicode 6.0. 🥱 Yawning face arrived with Emoji 12.0 in 2019, 😮‍💨 and 😵‍💫 in Emoji 13.1, 🫠 and 🪫 in 2021, and 🫩 Face with bags under eyes in Emoji 16.0 in 2024. Platforms still draw 😴 differently: some give it one big Z, others a trail of three, so the same message can look sound asleep on one phone and merely dozing on another.
