They're going to bed, staying in bed, or staying home. Late at night, alone or after "gn" (good night), it closes the chat: phone down, talk tomorrow. In reply to an invitation it is a soft no, friendlier than "can't", because the bed does the refusing. Next to a sick face or "feeling awful" it means off sick in bed, and on a slow weekend it can mean a lie-in.

The tone is cosy and a little lazy: natural with friends and family, too casual for anything formal.

Why are there both 🛌 and a separate bed 🛏️?

🛌 is the person asleep; 🛏️ is only the furniture. Both come out of Unicode's work on encoding the picture symbols of Wingdings and Webdings, Microsoft's old symbol fonts. The fonts' bed became 🛏️, while in a 2012 review this character was recast as "sleeping accommodation", a lodging symbol rather than a font bed. That formal name is why, in hotel or trip planning, 🛌 can stand for somewhere to sleep for the night. In everyday chat, read it as sleep.
