Beer emoji: 🍺 and 🍻, the two most-sent drinks
Beer Mug is a single stein with a head of foam, and Clinking Beer Mugs is two of them meeting mid-air. Both came in with Unicode 6.0 in 2010, straight from the Japanese carrier emoji sets, and they have been the default way to say "drinks?", "cheers" and "Friday" ever since. The difference matters: is the drink, is the company. Send to say you are having one, to invite someone or to congratulate them.
In the pub the beer goes with Pretzel and Peanuts, which is how people write Oktoberfest or a bar night without words: . Google's version of was famous for the wrong reason in 2017: the mug was half empty with the foam floating above the beer. It was redrawn, full to the brim, in the same Android 8.1 update that put the cheese back on top of the hamburger.
Wine emoji, champagne emoji and the cheers emoji
Wine Glass shows red wine on every major platform, so it stands for wine in general, a dinner out, "wine o'clock" and the wine-mom joke. Grapes next to it says vineyard, wine tasting or a wine region, and Cheese Wedge turns it into a wine-and-cheese evening: .
Bottle with Popping Cork (Unicode 8.0, 2015) is the champagne emoji: the cork flies, the bubbles spray. Clinking Glasses followed in Unicode 9.0 in 2016 and became the cheers emoji for everything that is not beer: a promotion, an engagement, New Year's Eve, a birthday toast. Bubbles is the newer touch for sparkling wine or a prosecco brunch. If you want a toast that is warm rather than loud, alone does it; is the full celebration.
Cocktail emoji, whisky, sake and what to garnish them with
Cocktail Glass is a martini, olive and all, and reads as cocktails, happy hour and anything sophisticated. Tropical Drink is the holiday cocktail with a straw, a slice of fruit and a little umbrella: piña colada, mai tai, a beach bar at sunset, which is why it travels with and . Tumbler Glass arrived in 2016 and is the whiskey emoji: bourbon, scotch, an old fashioned, a nightcap. Sake shows a Japanese tokkuri flask with a small cup and is the emoji for sake, izakaya nights and, in Japan, any shared bottle. Alembic is the still that spirits are distilled in, for the craft-distillery crowd.
The bar itself is a few emoji long. Ice goes in a glass on the rocks, Pouring Liquid (Unicode 14.0, 2021) pours the drink, or spills it, or "pours one out" for someone gone. For garnish there is Olive for a martini, Lemon and Lime for gin and tonic and margaritas, Cherries for a Manhattan or a Shirley Temple, for an Aperol spritz or a mimosa, and for a piña colada, and Salt for the rim of a margarita or a tequila shot: .
Drunk emoji: tipsy, wasted and hungover faces
The drunk emoji people search for is Woozy Face: one eye drooping, mouth wavy, added in 2018 and immediately adopted for tipsy, buzzed and "had a few". Zany Face is the loud, silly stage of a night, Melting Face the quietly sinking one, Face with Spiral Eyes is the room spinning, and Face with Crossed-Out Eyes is passed out.
Past that point comes Nauseated Face and Face Vomiting, which say exactly what they look like. The morning after is Face with Head-Bandage and Person in Bed: "hungover, do not call". A good hangover text reads like a timeline: .
Night out emoji: from happy hour to the taxi home
Partying Face and Smiling Face with Sunglasses are the moods of a night out; Mirror Ball (2021), Man Dancing, Woman Dancing and People with Bunny Ears are the dance floor, is karaoke, the music. and mark the occasion being celebrated. The time and the place are Cityscape at Dusk for happy hour, and for the city at night, and for midnight, and Taxi for the ride home, the responsible end of every drinks combo.
Two signs belong here too. Identification Card is what the bouncer asks for and No One Under Eighteen is the age limit; together they write "21" or "adults only" on an invitation: . On Slack, Discord and GitHub you can type the shortcodes , :beers:, :wine_glass:, :cocktail:, :tropical_drink:, :champagne:, :clinking_glasses: and :tumbler_glass:. On an iPhone or Android keyboard, searching "beer", "wine" or "cheers" finds them; on Windows press Windows key . and on a Mac Control Command Space.
