It means the sender is taking, booking, or waiting on a paid ride.

People drop 🚕 into coordination messages at the start or end of an outing: leaving for a restaurant, heading to the airport, or letting friends know they got into a car safely after a late night. On its own, though, the icon doesn’t tell you which stage of the trip they’re at — “just ordered a car,” “riding in the back seat,” and “pulling up outside your door” all look the same unless they add a time or a few words.

In travel captions and city posts, particularly alongside 🗽 or 🌃, it shifts from logistics to mood, acting as visual shorthand for New York streets or a night on the town.

Does 🚕 mean a street cab or an Uber?

Either one — it stands for any paid car ride.

Unicode has no dedicated icon for app-based ride services, so people use 🚕 (or the plain car 🚗) for Uber, Lyft and local taxi apps alike. If the difference matters — for instance, whether your friend should watch for a yellow roof light at the curb or check a license plate in an app — spell out the service name.

Why is the taxi emoji yellow?

It follows the classic American yellow cab made famous by Chicago and New York.

Chicago entrepreneur John Hertz painted his cabs bright yellow so riders could spot them, and built that look into the Yellow Cab Company he founded in 1915; New York City required all its licensed cabs to be yellow in 1967. Some designs also add a black-and-white checkered stripe along the doors, like the one on the Checker Marathon sedans that served American cities until 1982. Real taxis wear other colours in many places, London’s black cabs among them, but the yellow sedan with a roof light is a widely recognised picture of a car for hire.
