Articulated Lorry

28/50

🚛 is the semi truck emoji: a cab pulling a long separate trailer, the big rig or 18-wheeler you pass on the motorway. People send it when something heavy is on the move, from an online order to a whole household. It pictures transport, not a tracking status, so a 🚛 beside your order is decoration, not proof the parcel has left.

EmojiSince 2015

What 🚛 means

A tractor unit towing one long trailer, joined at a pivot behind the cab. As of 2026, most platforms draw it from the side: a flat-fronted cab in front, a long box trailer behind, usually facing left. The trailer has no front wheels of its own; it rests on the back of the cab and bends there when the rig turns. That is the whole point of the design: one cab can drop a trailer at a depot and hook up another, and the combination can turn corners a single rigid truck of the same length never could.

The official name is pure British English. "Lorry" is what Britons call a truck, and "articulated" means jointed, like a finger. Americans call the same vehicle a semi, tractor-trailer, big rig or 18-wheeler; Australians say semi-trailer or articulated truck; in Ireland and much of Britain it is simply an "artic". One trailer is the tell: an Australian road train tows two or more.

What does it mean when someone sends 🚛?

Something bulky is being moved, or the sender works with trucks. The common cases are a shop or a friend announcing an order is on its way (often as 🚛), moving-day plans 🚛), a relative who drives for a living, or a traveller grumbling about being stuck behind one on a two-lane road. Businesses in haulage, logistics and removals use it as a badge in posts and bios, much as a baker uses .

The tone is plain and practical. The emoji never says whether the truck has actually set off, how long the trip will take or where the goods are now; only the words around it, or a tracking link, can tell you that. If a company's message says "shipped 🚛", trust the word, not the picture.

What is the real thing behind the picture?

The semi-trailer truck is how most goods travel the last hundreds of miles. Containers come off ships and trains onto these rigs; supermarket shelves, building sites and online orders are all fed by them. Drivers (truckers in America, lorry drivers or hauliers in Britain, long-haul drivers everywhere) often spend nights in a sleeper compartment behind the seats, and their work has its own culture of truck stops, CB radio nicknames and country songs.

The rig looks different depending on where you are. In Europe and Japan the cab sits flat over the engine, because length limits count the whole combination, so every centimetre spent on a bonnet is lost from the trailer. American rules are looser, so US trucks keep the long nose, chrome stacks and bigger sleeper that film and television made famous. The emoji's flat-fronted cab looks European or Japanese to American eyes, and perfectly ordinary to everyone else.

Plain, practical and friendly; it carries no hidden meaning and any mood comes from the words around it.

Don't read 🚛 next to an order as a shipping status; only the text or a tracking link confirms the parcel has left.

Worth knowing

  • "18-wheeler" is an exact count: a typical American rig has ten wheels on the tractor and eight on the trailer, with the trailer's front end resting on the tractor rather than on wheels of its own.
  • The coupling that joins cab and trailer is called a fifth wheel, a name inherited from horse-drawn wagons, where a horizontal wheel let the front axle swivel.

Questions people ask

4

Is 🚛 the semi truck emoji?

Yes. It is the semi, tractor-trailer or 18-wheeler with a separate trailer; the official name just uses the British word. Keyboards list it under truck, lorry or semi depending on the language, and is the smaller rigid delivery truck.

Does 🚛 mean my package has shipped?

Only if the message says so. On its own the emoji is a picture of a truck, not a tracking status; check the tracking details.

Which emoji should I use for moving house?

Either truck works. matches the box van most removal companies use; 🚛 fits a big move, a joke about how much stuff you own, or a long-distance relocation.

Is there an American-style truck emoji with a long nose?

No. 🚛 is the only semi truck emoji, and most designs give it a flat European-style cab. For a pickup truck use instead.
