Tools emoji meanings: 🔧 🔨 🛠️ 🪛 🔩 ⚙️
Wrench (a spanner in British English) is the all-purpose fix-it emoji: repairs, maintenance, mechanics, "I'll sort it out". Hammer means building, hard work and hitting something into place; online it also stands for the "banhammer" a moderator swings, and "hammered" for very drunk. Put the two together and you get Hammer and Wrench, the emoji that marks tools in general, a toolkit, a work in progress, or a developer's bug fix.
Screwdriver and Nut and Bolt cover assembly and hardware: flat-pack furniture, a loose screw, the "nuts and bolts" of a plan. Gear is the oldest of the set and the most versatile: it means machinery and engineering, but on every screen it is also the settings icon, so people use it for configuration, tweaking and anything mechanical. Clamp holds things still, and Toolbox is the whole kit, the handyman, or the thing you grab when something breaks.
Carpentry Saw is woodworking and cutting things down to size; Axe is chopping wood (and the odd horror film). Pick digs and mines, and thanks to Minecraft it is the emoji for mining, grinding and crafting of every kind; Hammer and Pick is the old crossed-tools sign for mining and heavy industry. Shovel digs, buries and clears snow. For lifting and holding there are Ladder, Hook, Magnet, Chains, Link and Knot, the rope end of the hardware store.
Construction emoji: and the building site
The three construction emoji almost everyone reaches for are Building Construction, a crane over an unfinished building; Construction, the striped barrier that means roadworks, a closed path or "under construction"; and Construction Worker in a hard hat. On most phones a long-press on offers the woman and man versions and five skin tones. Safety Vest adds the hi-vis jacket, and Rescue Worker's Helmet is the closest thing to a stand-alone hard hat emoji.
Materials have their own emoji: Brick (also "brick by brick" progress, and a bricked phone), Wood for lumber and timber, Rock for stone, and Hole for the trench, the pothole or the pit. Mechanic is the wrench-holding tradesperson, Factory Worker and Factory cover industry and manufacturing, and Flexed Biceps is the shorthand for heavy work.
A site also needs vehicles. Pickup Truck is the contractor's truck, Delivery Truck and Articulated Lorry haul materials, Tractor doubles as the digger when there is no excavator emoji, Oil Drum is the barrel on the site, and Wheel stands in for tyres and anything that rolls. There is no crane, bulldozer or cement-mixer emoji on its own; and do that work.
Under construction, DIY and home repair: which emoji to use when
For a page, profile or project that is not finished yet, alone is understood everywhere, and says "under construction" with no words. For a repair that is happening right now, or is the standard, which is why so many status pages and release notes use them for maintenance and bug fixes. after the tool means the job is done.
Home improvement posts mix tools with the house: Derelict House is the fixer-upper before, House is the after, Door and Window are what gets replaced, Paintbrush, Bucket and Broom are painting day and the clean-up. Measuring and marking out use Straight Ruler, Triangular Ruler and Pencil. For the trades that frighten most of us, there are High Voltage, Electric Plug, Battery, Light Bulb and Flashlight for electrics, and Plunger for the plumber.
Safety signs round the set off. Warning is the yellow triangle for any hazard, No Entry and Stop Sign close a road or a doorway, Fire Extinguisher hangs by the exit, and Mouse Trap is the pest-control corner of the hardware store (and a trap of any kind in slang). There is no traffic cone or pylon emoji; is what people use instead.
Where the tool emoji came from
The tools arrived in several waves. Gear and Hammer and Pick were encoded in Unicode 4.1 in 2005 as plain text symbols, long before colour emoji existed, and Pick, Chains and followed in 2009 from a Japanese broadcasting symbol set. The first true emoji tools, , came with the Japanese carrier emoji in Unicode 6.0 in 2010.
Hammer and Wrench, Clamp (its official name is "Compression") and Building Construction entered Unicode 7.0 in 2014, the first two rescued from the Wingdings fonts. Unicode 11.0 in 2018 added the hardware-store aisle: Toolbox, Brick, Magnet, Fire Extinguisher and Broom. Axe and Safety Vest came in 2019, and 2020's Unicode 13.0 brought the biggest batch: Carpentry Saw, Screwdriver, Hook, Ladder, Mouse Trap, Bucket, Plunger, Wood, Rock, Window, Knot and Pickup Truck.
Wheel was added in Unicode 14.0 in 2021, and Shovel is one of the newest emoji of all, from Unicode 16.0 in September 2024, so it still shows as an empty box on older phones and computers. If someone cannot see your shovel, or is a safe substitute.
Tool symbols you can type as text:
Several of these characters have a plain text form as well as the colour emoji, so they work in documents, code comments and places that strip emoji: gear, hammer and pick, pick, chains, warning, no entry and helmet. In HTML you can force the text look by adding ︎ after the character, or the emoji look with ️.
Then there are symbols that exist only as text. Gear Without Hub and Gear With Handles are two more cogwheels from the same 2009 Japanese set as ; they are handy as settings or machinery icons in plain text. Caution Sign is a text-only warning mark, is the Japanese Industrial Standards mark printed on certified products in Japan, and is the technical house symbol, the one old keyboards and menus used for "home". The political Hammer and Sickle is a tool symbol by shape only, so it is not in this collection.

15Worth knowing
- There is no gavel emoji, so Hammer gets used for judges, court cases and "the verdict is in"; it is one of the most requested missing emoji.
- Gear and Hammer and Pick are older than emoji: they entered Unicode in 2005 as text symbols and only gained their colour emoji form in 2015.
- is officially named "Compression", not clamp; it and Hammer and Wrench were taken from the Wingdings font when Unicode 7.0 preserved its icons in 2014.
- Shovel was added in Unicode 16.0 in September 2024, fifteen years after Pick, which is why many devices still cannot show it.
- A wrench symbol lit up on a car dashboard is not an emoji but the service reminder; it shares its shape with , which is why "wrench emoji on car" is such a common search.
