What ๐ means
A full battery: power, charge and having energy to spare. The picture is a single cell, the kind that goes in a remote control, with the little raised terminal at one end and the fill showing it is topped up. Nobody sends it to report 100 % on their phone, though; it is shorthand for the state of being charged, whatever is doing the charging.
Most of its life is spent describing people. The social battery is the idea that time with other people uses up a limited store of energy, and time alone or asleep refills it. The metaphor spread widely in the 2010s, especially among people who call themselves introverts, and ๐ became its natural icon: a full social battery means you have the energy to go out, chat and be good company. Its opposite, the low battery , was added to Unicode in 2021 partly to give that feeling of being drained its own emoji.
The literal reading is still common and perfectly ordinary: "found a charger ๐", "fully charged, leaving now ๐", or a travel checklist of things to pack. It also turns up in talk about electric cars, power banks and renewable energy, where it simply means battery.
What does ๐ mean when someone sends it?
They have energy again, or their phone does; the words around it decide. Next to chargers, cables or a phone that died earlier, it is literal: back online, reachable again. After a mention of sleep, a day off, coffee or a holiday, it means "recharged" in the personal sense: good mood, ready to go.
Sent in reply to an invitation it is a friendly yes-ish: "I've got the energy for this." Treat it as enthusiasm rather than a commitment. Paired with it narrates a before-and-after, from wrecked to recovered. There is no sarcastic or hidden meaning to worry about; the worst it can do is leave you unsure which battery is being discussed, and a quick "you or the phone?" settles that.
Casual and positive: a quick "powered up" check-in or a plain phone update. No edge, no sarcasm, safe in any chat.
A lone ๐ is not a confirmed plan. If you need a yes, ask for the word.

4Worth knowing
- ๐ was one of the emoji carried over into Unicode in 2010 from the Japanese mobile carriers' sets; Unicode's source mapping lists it under the carrier KDDI.
- The emoji draws a cylindrical cell with a raised terminal, the shape of an AA battery, even though the phones that display it run on flat packs nobody ever sees.
Questions people ask
4Is the battery emoji full or empty?
Full. On every major platform it shows a charged cell, and as of 2026 most draw the charge in green. For a drained battery, use , which is red or nearly empty.
Is there a low battery emoji?
Yes, , added in 2021. On phones and computers that have not been updated since then it appears as a blank box, which is one reason people still write "๐ at 2 %" to mean the same thing.
What is a social battery?
A way of describing how much energy you have for other people. Socialising uses it up, quiet time refills it. A full social battery ๐ means you are ready for company; an empty one means you need a night in.
Does ๐ have any rude or hidden meaning?
No. It is one of the plainest emoji around: either the device is charged or the person is. The only ambiguity is which of the two they mean.
