vertical capacitor

Vertical capacitor

21/686

𜰔 is the capacitor symbol from circuit diagrams: two parallel plates with a wire leading out of each, here turned upright so the wires run up and down. It exists so circuits can be drawn in plain text, joined to box-drawing lines. Many fonts don't have it yet, so you may see an empty box instead.

Text symbol

What 𜰔 means

It marks a capacitor in a circuit drawn out of text characters. A capacitor is an electronic part that stores electric charge between two metal plates, and on most circuit diagrams it is drawn as two short parallel bars with a lead on each side. 𜰔 is that drawing as a single character, with the plates lying flat and the leads pointing up and down, so it fits into a vertical wire.

The character belongs to a set of circuit pieces (resistors, coils, antennas, diodes) made to connect end-to-end with the box-drawing lines that have long been in Unicode. Put 𜰔 on a line between a above and a below and you have a capacitor in a vertical wire; use its horizontal twin between two for a wire running across. With a font that lines them up, someone can sketch a schematic in a chat, a text file or a terminal without drawing a picture.

It got into Unicode in 2024 because of old computers. Sharp's MZ series of home computers, starting with the MZ-80K sold in Japan in 1978, had circuit symbols built into its screen character set so hobbyists could draw schematics on screen, and Unicode added those characters so text from those machines can be carried into modern systems without loss. Today it turns up rarely, mostly in the hands of electronics hobbyists.

Questions people ask

2

Why do I see a box or question mark instead of the symbol?

Usually because your font lacks it. The character was added in 2024 and many everyday fonts don't cover it yet. The sender saw a capacitor; you need a font that supports this character. A bare question mark can also mean the text got garbled on the way.

Is there a capacitor symbol that works everywhere?

Not one guaranteed to display everywhere. 𜰔 is a single character, but it needs font support. A rough fallback that shows on any device is ordinary characters, such as for a capacitor in a wire, or simply the part's name.
