What 𜰓 means

It identifies a capacitor in an electrical schematic. A capacitor stores electrical charge; this mark names the component, not its value or exact model.

The 2021 Unicode proposal maps it from code EC in the Sharp MZ Japanese primary display set. EC was the old screen-character code, not Unicode; converting saved MZ text therefore needs a character-set mapping. The proposal aimed to preserve old data and groups this mark with box-drawing lines.

By 1968, an MIT computer-graphics report offered a light-pen command—a stylus used on a screen—for drawing a horizontal capacitor. An Army training report from 1973 describes stored circuit symbols for building diagrams on screen.

Why does 𜰓 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
