What ๐ means
It marks one place: here, this spot, this address. Think of a pin stuck into a map. Wherever ๐ appears, the words next to it name a location: a city, a cafรฉ, a street address, a country someone is visiting. On social media it has become the standard way to caption where a photo was taken ("๐ Lisbon") and the first line of event posts ("๐ Central Park, 2 pm"). In bios it sits in front of a hometown or base. In group chats it introduces the meeting point.
It is a labelling emoji rather than an emotional one. It carries no mood of its own, which is why it appears in business posts, cafรฉ menus, wedding invitations and casual "๐ kitchen, bring snacks" texts alike. The surrounding words supply the feeling; the pin just says "location follows."
On most platforms, as of 2026, it is drawn in red: either a ball-headed pin or a shape close to the familiar teardrop map marker. The design varies, but the reading is stable everywhere.
What does it mean when someone sends you ๐?
They are telling you where something is, or asking you to. Sent with an address or venue name, it means "meet here, exactly here." Sent alone in reply to "where are you?", it usually means a real shared location or a photo is coming next, or that the sender is at the agreed place. Sent as a question ("๐?") it asks for yours.
The pin itself is only a character. It does not reveal where the sender is and cannot track anyone. If you receive just ๐ and no map appears, ask for the address; if a map does appear, that is your messaging app's own location-sharing feature, not the emoji.
Why is a map marker called a pushpin?
Because the emoji is older than the map marker's fame. Unicode names it round pushpin and files it with office supplies beside , the ordinary slanted pushpin. The round-headed pin had long been the kind stuck into wall maps, so once smartphones put a map in every pocket, this office emoji became the natural stand-in for the digital marker.
That digital marker has its own history. Designer Jens Eilstrup Rasmussen drew the upside-down teardrop pin for the launch of Google Maps in 2005, and it later entered the design collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Artist Aram Bartholl built life-size versions of it and planted them in real cities between 2006 and 2019, a joke about the digital world leaking into the physical one. The emoji is a different drawing, but in messages it does the same job.
Neutral and practical, like a label on a map. It fits formal invitations and casual chats equally.
It is only text: it never shares or reveals anyone's actual location.

Questions people ask
3Does ๐ share my live location?
No. Typing ๐ is just text. A map that appears in a chat comes from the app's own location-sharing feature; in Apple Messages, as of 2026, a sent map pin is a fixed spot and Live Location is a separate action.
Is ๐ the Google Maps pin?
Not the same graphic. Google's teardrop marker is a company design from 2005; the emoji is Unicode's round pushpin. Platforms draw the emoji in their own styles, often close to a map marker, and everyone reads it as one.
Can I use ๐ for a pinned post or an important note?
You can, but is the one people expect for pinning things. ๐ tells readers a place name is coming.
