Telegram symbols meaning: ticks, clocks, stars and badges
Telegram's own interface symbols cannot be copied, but they are what most people searching "telegram symbols meaning" want explained. Under a sent message, one tick means the message reached Telegram's cloud and the other person was notified; two ticks mean they opened the chat and read it. Telegram's FAQ is explicit that there is no "delivered to the device" stage, which is why the ticks never change colour the way WhatsApp's do. A small clock in place of the tick means the message is still on its way, usually because of a weak connection or a large file. In groups the second tick appears as soon as one member has read the message. Channels show no ticks at all; an eye with a number is the view counter. A message to one person that stays on one tick for days, when they are visibly online, is the usual sign that they have blocked you, though Telegram never says so outright.
Next to some names sits a star-shaped badge: that is Telegram Premium, launched in June 2022. Since September 2022 a Premium user can replace it with an emoji status, any animated custom emoji, which then shows in the chat list, the profile and in groups. The badge and the status are drawn by Telegram, not typed, so there is no "premium star emoji" to copy; the nearest characters are , and is also the sign of Telegram Stars, the in-app currency for gifts, bots and paid posts. The blue verified badge with a tick is Telegram's own too, given to notable channels and public figures, and since 2025 organisations that Telegram has verified can hand out their own marks. Pasting after a name imitates it and fools nobody who looks twice. The padlock before a chat name marks a secret chat, the pin a pinned chat, the crossed bell a muted one, and the four emoji at the top of a voice call are an encryption fingerprint: both sides should see the same four.
Symbols for Telegram names and bios: what each field accepts
A Telegram username, the part after the @ and in your t.me link, takes only lowercase Latin letters, digits and underscores, with at least five characters, so no symbol or emoji will ever go in there. Everything decorative belongs in the name: first and last name each hold up to 64 characters of any kind, emoji included, which is where ✈️ Oleg, ꒰ mira ꒱, Dani 💙 or 「KAI」 live. The bio holds 70 characters, or 140 with Premium (which also allows a link in it), so a bio is a short card: one symbol, a few words, a divider, a second line. Channel and group titles behave like names and accept any character, and their description takes up to 255 characters.
Two cautions, said once. A name set in fancy Unicode letters is read letter by letter by screen readers and will not match when someone searches for your plain name inside Telegram, so keep the letters plain and decorate with a symbol or two. And Telegram shows names on every platform in its own font, where some rare characters come out as boxes; the frames, stars and dots on this page are the ones that render everywhere. For the ornamental alphabets themselves see Fancy Symbols and Aesthetic Symbols, and for gamer-style frames like ꧁꧂ the Nickname Symbols collection.
Telegram emoji for channel names and posts
Telegram channels are named the way Discord channels are: one emoji in front, then the name. The emoji does the sorting in a subscriber's chat list long before the title is read, so channels pick the obvious one for their subject: or for announcements, for news, for finance and crypto, for courses, for films, for music, for games, for shops and giveaways, for a bot's own channel, where the content is adult. Inside posts the convention is a pointing hand or a tick at the start of each line, 👉 Join the chat, ✅ Verified seller, and a bar of or for progress, a fundraiser or a countdown.
Telegram also reads a few plain characters as formatting while you type: two asterisks round a word make it bold, two underscores italic, two tildes strikethrough, two vertical bars a spoiler, one backtick monospace and three backticks a code block (the same styles sit under Formatting in the right-click or long-press menu, and bots use a different markup through the Bot API). Since July 2026 a rich text editor adds headings, tables, lists, quotes and code blocks to long posts. If you want a literal asterisk or bar in a name or post, use a look-alike from the last group on this page: ⁎ for a star, for a bar, _ for an underscore, for a tilde.
Telegram emoji meanings: reactions, animated emoji and games
Every message on Telegram can be reacted to, and the set is odd enough that people look its members up. Besides the universal , Telegram offers (a whale, read as "huge" or "wow"), (sweet or flirting), (rare, magical, too good to be true), (the stone-faced deadpan), (that was ridiculous), (take your pills, or the red-pill joke), (yes sir, understood), (awkward or lurking), (silly), (peace, or rest in peace), (burning love) and (completely agree). A double tap sends your quick reaction, unless you change it; a long press opens the rest. Since September 2022 everyone gets dozens of reactions, Premium users can add up to three per message and pick from custom emoji, and group admins decide which reactions their group allows.
Some emoji do more than sit there. Send alone in a chat and it rolls a random number for both of you; the dice arrived in March 2020 for lockdown board-game nights and were joined by darts, basketball, football, a slot machine and bowling, each with a win and a miss, decided on Telegram's servers so neither side can cheat. In a one-to-one chat many emoji sent on their own appear large and animated, and tapping one plays a full-screen effect both people see: and the 2022 batch . The animated Premium emoji in messages, statuses and packs are custom emoji: stickers that live on Telegram, not Unicode characters. Copying one gives you only the plain emoji it stands on, which is why no site can offer "premium emoji copy and paste". Emoji packs are free to browse, and anyone can try custom emoji in Saved Messages.

14Worth knowing
- Telegram has no "delivered" tick. Its FAQ says one tick means the message reached Telegram's cloud and two mean it was read; the "delivered to device" stage WhatsApp shows simply does not exist on Telegram.
- The dice appeared on 30 March 2020, in the same update as chat folders, pitched to people missing their board-game partners during lockdown. The number is drawn on Telegram's servers, so both players see the same roll.
- A Telegram username cannot contain a single symbol (only a–z, 0–9 and underscore), yet the display name beside it accepts 64 characters of anything, so every decorated Telegram name you see is a name, never a username.
- Since 16 September 2022 a Premium user's emoji status literally takes the place of the Premium badge next to their name, which is why some Premium accounts show a star and others show a dancing duck.
- The four emoji at the top of a Telegram voice call are not decoration: they encode the call's encryption key, and if both callers see the same four, nobody is listening in between.
