What ✱ means
It marks text for prominent attention, decorative separation, or strong visual emphasis. The editorial asterisk traces back to the ancient Library of Alexandria: Aristophanes of Byzantium introduced the star-shaped mark to flag repeated lines, and Aristarchus of Samothrace kept it in his Homeric editions, pairing it with a horizontal stroke to indicate lines he considered misplaced. Medieval scribes later adapted similar star marks to guide readers to marginal notes, glosses, and text corrections.
While the standard keyboard asterisk (*) evolved into a lightweight symbol for footnote citations, masking sensitive text, and inline multiplication in formulas, the heavy asterisk belongs to the dingbat tradition. People choose its darker weight when designing lists, paragraph breaks, or headings where an ordinary asterisk would look too thin.

3Questions people ask
1Why does ✱ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
