What ■ means
Its placement tells you what it marks. Before list items, the solid square works as a square bullet; after a mathematical proof, it signals that the argument is finished. Your font draws it, so its size, weight and alignment change with the typeface.
If someone sends only ■, ask what they meant it to mark. Reading anger, sadness or a firm goodbye into it would be a guess. A row of squares may show filled positions or form a decorative pattern; the text around it supplies the key.
Where does the black square symbol come from?
Several separate histories, not one origin. In music, square chant notation — the square-headed notes used for medieval church singing — developed from French neumes in the late 11th and early 12th centuries. That lineage belongs to musical notation, not to the typed computer character.
In modern art, Kazimir Malevich's 1915 painting Black Square became the defining icon of Suprematism, building an abstract visual language out of fundamental geometric forms. Visual resemblance across different fields reflects independent utility rather than shared ancestry.
Plain in a list; puzzling as an entire reply.
Do not assume a lone ■ is an emotional signal.

4Questions people ask
1Is ■ the same as the QED symbol?
Not exactly. QED stands for quod erat demonstrandum ("which was to be demonstrated"), marking the end of a proof. While a filled square often serves this role, Unicode has a separate tombstone character ().

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
