Early-1970s teletext (TV information pages) and home computers from mid-1970s to mid-1980s used block graphics. Source tables map 🭻 to Ohio Scientific and Sharp MZ’s Japanese-primary display set. A 2019 Unicode proposal grouped these forms for compatibility with old character data.
Why does 🭻 end in 7?

The strip sits in the cell’s last band. Repeated side by side, it makes a longer line.

They share a shape, but are distinct characters.
Unicode links ▁ as the general lower block. As of 2026, terminal support varies; some draw glyphs missing from fonts.
