What ▁ means
It draws the lowest bar in charts made of text. Line it up with its siblings and you get eight heights, so a row of characters becomes a tiny chart: ▁▁. That kind of word-sized chart is called a sparkline. Because it is plain text, it can go into chats, terminals, code comments and bios, though how neat it looks depends on the font. These block shapes come from old computer and terminal character sets, built for drawing pictures with text before images were easy; Unicode kept them.
It is not an underscore. The underscore _ is punctuation for file names, usernames and blanks, and its height and width change from font to font. ▁ is a graphic block meant to fill the full cell width and touch its neighbours, so in a good terminal font ▁▁▁ makes one unbroken line. Use ▁ for charts, _ for typing text.

3Questions people ask
2Why is ▁ stuck in front of words in AI token lists?
It marks a word boundary. Some tokenizers (tools that cut text into pieces for language models) use ▁ where a space or word start was, so "▁hello" means hello begins a new word. It is a marker, not part of the word.
Why does my bar show gaps or uneven steps?
Usually the font or the app drawing it. Block characters are meant to touch seamlessly in terminal fonts; if your font lacks them, another fills in with different heights. A fixed-width font that includes these block shapes often helps.
