box drawings light quadruple dash vertical

Light quadruple dash vertical

11/128

┊ is a thin dotted vertical line built from four short dashes, a box-drawing character for drawing tables, frames and diagrams in plain text. It works as a faint divider, and people also stack it as a delicate decoration in aesthetic bios and post headers. It carries no hidden message.

What ┊ means

Drawing faint lines and dividers in plain text.

Box-drawing characters let you draw tables, boxes and screens out of ordinary text. In a fixed-width (monospaced) font every character fills one cell of the same size, and these lines run to the cell edges, so they join up with their neighbours into continuous frames. Unicode gathered them from older terminal and computer character sets, in solid, heavy, three-dash and four-dash forms, so one drawing can mix strong lines with faint ones.

┊ is the thin four-dash vertical. Next to the solid it reads as a secondary or dotted rule: a column guide, a dashed border, an optional connection in a diagram, or a quiet separator in a text-based program.

Why do people put it in bios and posts?

As decoration: it looks like a delicate dotted thread.

In aesthetic-style text on social profiles, fan pages and post headers, people line up several ┊ side by side, often ending them with small stars or sparkles, to make hanging dotted threads or a soft frame around a name. It is style, not code: it means nothing beyond looking neat. Because each phone and app draws it with its own font, the dashes can look longer, shorter or slightly different from one screen to the next.

Neutral and visual: technical in diagrams and terminals, purely decorative in bios and headers.

Questions people ask

2

Why does it look broken or misaligned?

Because of the font. Box-drawing lines are designed to meet the cells above and below, so proportional fonts or fonts missing these glyphs leave gaps. A monospaced font usually lines them up.

Is there an Alt code for ┊?

Not a classic one. Windows Altnumber codes follow an old character set that only has solid and double lines. In Word, type 250A then AltX instead.
