Stock emoji meanings: 📈 📉 📊 and the market mood
Chart Increasing is the stock emoji for anything going up: a share price, sales, follower counts, your mood. Chart Decreasing is the same line falling, used for losses, crashes and anything that has gone downhill. On Apple and many other platforms the rising line is drawn in red and the falling one in blue, which looks backwards to Western traders; the colours follow the Japanese phone keyboards these emoji came from, where red stood for a market going up.
Bar Chart is the neutral one: data, results, a quarterly report, a poll. Chart Increasing with Yen is a rising chart with a sign, which Japanese carriers used for stock and currency prices before the symbols were added to Unicode 6.0 in 2010. People use it as a green "markets are up" badge even when the currency is not yen. Stock Chart is a plain text pictograph from an old symbol font, handy where a colourful emoji would look out of place.
Ox is the emoji everyone uses for a bull market, because there is no separate bull emoji; a bull attacks by thrusting its horns up, a bear swipes its paws down, and that is the usual story behind the two words. Bear therefore means falling prices, pessimism and short sellers. Send for "we're bullish" and for "bearish". Crab is the third animal: a market that moves sideways is "crabbing".
Money, banks and the trading desk
Money Bag and Dollar Banknote are the profit emoji; Money with Wings is money leaving your account, so it doubles as a loss and as spending. Coin, added in Unicode 13.0 in 2020, stands for coins, savings and crypto tokens; Heavy Dollar Sign is the emoji version of . The Money Emoji & Currency Symbols collection has every banknote and currency sign if you need more.
Bank is the bank itself, a central bank decision or a deposit. Classical Building gets used for the stock exchange, the Fed and "the institutions", because exchange buildings and treasuries tend to have columns. ATM is cash out, Currency Exchange is forex, Credit Card is card spending and debt, and Receipt is proof of a purchase or the tax bill.
For the people and tools of finance: Briefcase and Necktie say business and "finance bro", Office Worker is the banker or analyst, Handshake is a deal closed, Bell is the opening or closing bell of the exchange, Newspaper is market news, Ledger and Abacus are accounting, and Balance Scale is a balanced portfolio or risk versus reward. Bullseye marks a price target, Crystal Ball a prediction, Eyes a stock you are watching, and Robot a trading bot.
Diamond hands, to the moon and the stock meme emoji
The meme layer of stock emoji grew up on Reddit's WallStreetBets and in crypto chats and went mainstream during the GameStop short squeeze of January 2021. Diamond Hands means holding a position through a crash without selling; the opposite is Paper Hands, someone who sells at the first dip. Rocket means a price is about to shoot up, and a wall of rockets is the WallStreetBets way of hyping a stock. or Moon completes "to the moon", with Astronaut along for the ride.
Gorilla is the "ape", the self-described retail investor ("apes together strong"); Whale is a holder big enough to move the price on their own; Wolf is the Wolf of Wall Street type; Shark is a loan shark or a predatory trader. Handbag is the "bag holder" who is stuck with a stock that has collapsed. Pig Face is the piggy bank and the old saying that bulls make money, bears make money, pigs get slaughtered. Turtle is slow, steady index investing.
When things go wrong there is a full vocabulary: Skull and Coffin for a dead portfolio, Headstone for "RIP my savings", for the loss, Clown for a stupid trade, Melting Face for watching the chart melt, Blood for a bloodbath, Collision for a crash and Roller Coaster for volatility. A good day gets , , , and ; a nervous one gets , , and .
Crypto emoji: and the coin mascots
Bitcoin Sign is a text character, added to Unicode 10.0 in 2017, so it works in usernames and bios where emoji are blocked; Coin is its emoji stand-in. Chains and Link mean the blockchain (and Chainlink), Pick is mining, are wallets, locked liquidity and private keys. Dog Face is Dogecoin and the Shiba Inu coins, and Frog is the Pepe meme coin crowd.
The crypto crowd uses the same rockets, moons, whales and diamond hands as stock traders, often with more of them, and adds "HODL" (a 2013 forum typo for hold that became the word for refusing to sell). If you only want crypto, the Crypto & Bitcoin Emoji collection goes deeper.
Stock symbols in text: % and candle colours
Tickers and finance sites show price changes with small triangles: up and down, often coloured green and red, with the hollow and the small as alternatives for tighter spaces. Plain arrows do the same job in a post: , the diagonal and for a trend, the doubled and for a sharp move, and for a volatile up-and-down session. The emoji arrows and buttons are the colourful versions.
Candlestick colours get their own emoji: or for a green (up) candle or a green day, or for red. and are the classic red up and down triangles. The block characters stack into a tiny bar chart in plain text, which is how some bots draw sparklines in a tweet or a Discord message.
The number symbols every finance post needs are plain text too: % and ‰ for returns, and for gains and losses (the proper minus sign lines up with the plus better than a hyphen), , and for estimates, # for the cashtag's cousin, and the Greek letters traders borrow: Δ delta for change, α alpha for returns above the market, β beta for volatility against it, σ sigma for standard deviation and for a sum.
