Down-right arrow

4/21

↘️ is the down-right (or southeast) arrow. In messages and social posts, it often works as a visual pointer directing your eye to a link, caption, button, or next line sitting below and to the right. Next to prices, stats, or a metric, it reads like a falling line on a chart—a drop or decline—while on maps and weather reports it marks southeast.

What ↘️ means

It points toward something just below, or signals a drop. Most of the time, ↘️ is a practical layout cue. In left-to-right text, which flows from top-left toward bottom-right, a diagonal arrow aimed down and right naturally leads the reader's eye from a heading or callout into the next line, a link, an attached photo, or a corner button.

Context changes the reading immediately. Placed beside a number, price, or percentage, ↘️ mimics a line graph moving left to right and downward, so people read it as a decrease, discount, or slump. In navigation, weather forecasts, and geography, it marks southeast (SE), the in-between direction of south and east. On weather maps, check the legend: an arrow usually shows where the wind is heading, while a wind's name says where it comes from.

Neutral, functional, and matter-of-fact—used to organize text, guide attention, or summarize data at a glance.

Next to a person's name, project, or mood, it can read as "going downhill" if not clearly pointing at something below.

Worth knowing

  • The characters behind ↘️ existed in Unicode 8 years before anyone was allowed to draw them in colour: Unicode 3.2 in 2002, emoji presentation in 2010.
  • ↘️ is not one character. It is 2 of them glued together, which is why deleting it sometimes takes two presses of backspace and why it breaks character counters.

Questions people ask

2

Why does ↘️ look like a colored emoji on my phone but a plain thin arrow on my computer?

Because its base character is a plain text arrow far older than emoji. Followed by the emoji selector (UFE0F, an invisible code requesting emoji style), most phones draw a colored emoji; without it, fonts usually show a simple monochrome arrow.

Does ↘️ have a hidden slang meaning?

Not an established one. ↘️ mostly stays literal: it points at something lower on the screen, marks southeast, or shows that a number or mood is heading down.
