Top Arrow

A button that says TOP, not a plain up arrow. The picture is a word in a box with an arrow above or beside it, the way a link looks on an old mobile web page. The arrow only repeats what the word says: this points to the top.

That is because it was a real button. Japanese mobile carriers sold phones with built-in picture characters long before emoji went worldwide, and websites made for those phones ended with a link to jump back to the start. The TOP sign was that link, alongside BACK, END, ON! and SOON. When the carrier sets were merged into Unicode, a 2008 mapping labelled it “Top of page”, and the five little buttons came along as a family: 🔙 🔚 🔛 🔜 🔝.

Outside Japan nobody had those pages, so the emoji kept the word and lost the job. Today it is read exactly as it is printed: TOP.

What does it mean when someone sends 🔝?

They are calling something, or you, the best. “This place is 🔝”, “you’re 🔝”, a name followed by 🔝 in a list: all of it means first place, top quality, favourite. In Portuguese, French, Italian and German, “top” is an everyday word of praise on its own, so the emoji drops straight into speech there; in English it leans on phrases like “top tier” and “top pick”.

Three in a row, 🔝🔝🔝, is hype rather than ranking: a cheer under a friend’s photo or a team’s result. Businesses use it in captions for “top quality” or “top sellers”, which gives it a slightly salesy edge when overdone.

The one place it still means a direction is next to actual navigation: a long post or newsletter that puts 🔝 beside “back to top”. If there is no link, assume praise.
