What ⁉️ means
A question asked in shock: “what?!”, “seriously?!”, “how?!” The exclamation mark supplies the jolt and the question mark asks for an explanation, so ⁉️ fits any moment where you are surprised and want to know more at once. “You QUIT⁉️”, “It costs how much⁉️”, “She said yes⁉️” all land as the same stunned double-take.
The surprise can be bad or good. After news of a breakup or a bill it reads as alarm; after concert tickets or a promotion it reads as delighted disbelief. The words around it decide, and when there are no words, the sender is simply asking you to explain yourself.
Someone sent me ⁉️. What are they saying?
They are stunned and want you to elaborate, right now. Sent on its own in reply, ⁉️ means “explain”, “you can't just drop that and leave” or “are you serious?”. Answer the surprise first, then fill in the details; a bare ⁉️ is rarely angry, just impatient to hear more.
Younger users also stack it as comic exaggeration with no real question behind it: “me when the alarm goes off at 6⁉️”, or “HE'S SO TALL⁉️” with a row of 😭. Read it there as a cartoon gasp, the texting equivalent of eyes bulging out of a head. Older relatives are more likely to send it as an actual question, so from them “Dinner at 9⁉️” usually means they think 9 is late and would like to hear why.
Where does the !? combination come from?
From advertising, and from the Japanese phones that invented emoji. Writers have doubled up ! and ? for well over a century to mark an astonished question. In 1962 New York advertising executive Martin Speckter proposed fusing them into one new mark, the interrobang ‽, named from “interrogation” and “bang”, printers' slang for an exclamation mark. It got press, a few typefaces and even a typewriter key, then faded, though it still has a cult following among typography fans.
⁉️ itself has nothing to do with that fused design. It was one of the punctuation symbols in the original Japanese mobile emoji sets, where a stacked “!?” was a standard manga-style reaction, and it came into the worldwide emoji set along with them. Unicode keeps the two side-by-side marks as one character so that the emoji survives as a single, usually red, unit.
Loud and informal: a gasp in text. Great for friends and group chats, out of place in anything you want to sound calm or professional.
Replied to a sincere question, it can read as “are you kidding me?” and sound mocking.

3Worth knowing
- The interrobang briefly went mainstream: in 1968 Remington Rand sold a typewriter with an optional interrobang key, and a 1966 typeface included the mark.
- The State Library of New South Wales in Australia uses an interrobang as its logo, celebrating the way libraries answer startled questions.
Questions people ask
3Is ⁉️ rude?
Not usually. Among friends it is a playful gasp. It turns rude only when it mocks a sincere question or piles onto someone already embarrassed.
Is ⁉️ the same as the interrobang?
No. The interrobang ‽ is one fused mark; ⁉️ is an exclamation and question mark side by side as an emoji. The shortcode :interrobang: just borrows the famous name.
Why does ⁉️ look different on my phone and my computer?
Because it is punctuation that can display as text or as emoji. Phone keyboards show a red emoji; some desktop fonts show plain black !? instead. The meaning is identical.
How to type ⁉️

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
