medieval question mark

Medieval Question Mark

⹔ is an old question mark that could tell a reader to lift their voice as well as mark a question. The punctus interrogativus belongs mainly in manuscript transcription and historical editions. Its printed shape is a modern font’s rendering, not one universal manuscript drawing.

What ⹔ means

It marked a question and could cue a rising reading voice.

The old question mark belongs to the medieval punctus interrogativus tradition, where punctuation could guide reading aloud as well as divide sentences.

In medieval use, ⹔ marked an interrogative. The reversed ⸮ was associated with rhetorical questions—questions asked for effect rather than an answer.

How did punctus interrogativus guide reading?

It could guide a reader’s voice, not just the sentence.

The oldest cited examples are associated with manuscripts copied at the Corbie monastery under its abbot Maurdramme in 772–781.

Medieval monastic punctuation helped readers manage pauses, pitch, and vocal delivery during liturgical or public reading. In the medieval play Jeu d’Adam, concentrated use in dialogue fits theatrical recitation: the mark could signal a change in vocal tone during quick exchanges. Over time, the interrogative function narrowed toward questions expecting an answer, a development associated with modern ? and the inverted ¿.

Keep ⹔ in a faithful historical transcription

Manuscripts do not give the mark one universal silhouette: an angular printed glyph may represent a less-angular handwritten form. In one example from the Beneventan tradition, a medieval handwriting style, ⹔ comes after a clause inside a sentence and before a final full stop.

For an edition that preserves a particular manuscript, retain its punctuation. In ordinary modern prose, ? is clearer; ⹔ signals that the historical form itself matters.

Specialist historical punctuation for manuscript transcription and scholarly editions; elsewhere, using it is a deliberate stylistic choice.

Do not replace it with ⸮: that reversed mark carries the rhetorical-question role.

Why does ⹔ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
