What does ⹓ mean?
It marks an exclamatory or admiring clause.
The sign grew from rhetorical punctuation: marks that helped readers shape speech aloud. Iacopo Alpoleio described and claimed it around 1360; Coluccio Salutati used it in a manuscript dated 1399.
During the sixteenth century, its use competed with the question mark. Printing helped punctuation move from an oral cue toward stable written structure.
