What ! means
Read it with the words, not as automatic shouting.
Also called a bang, ! supplies some of the tone a voice would carry. A 2024 texting study found readers rated users of the mark as friendlier.
Casual warmth can become overemphasis in formal prose.
Repeated marks can make a work message look breathless.
