dollar sign

Dollar sign

The dollar sign $ marks a money amount, but on its own it doesn't mean US dollars: several currencies share this money sign, so write USD when you mean US dollars. Before letters, the surrounding post or code decides the reading.

What $ means

It usually means money, not one specific currency.

A price such as $20 needs context. If buyer and seller are in different countries, write USD 20 or CAD 20 rather than leaving them to guess.

In Bash, $HOME refers to a variable's value. To keep that text literal, use single quotes: '$HOME'. Double quotes still let the variable expand.

Neutral in prices; finance-specific before tickers and technical in code.

Do not assume $ means USD when money is changing hands.

Why does $ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
