Flag: Guyana

100/259

🇬🇾 is the flag of Guyana, the English-speaking country on the northern coast of South America, between Venezuela, Brazil and Suriname. Guyanese people call it the Golden Arrowhead, after the long gold triangle that shoots across the green field. In messages it usually means Guyanese roots or pride, and it floods feeds every 26 May, Independence Day.

What 🇬🇾 means

Every colour on the flag stands for a part of Guyana. A long golden triangle points from the flagpole to the far edge, edged in white; a shorter red triangle sits on top of it at the pole side, edged in black; the rest is green. Guyana is one of the few flags with five colours and no stripes, which makes it easy to recognise once you know it.

The official reading is simple. Green is the country's forests and farmland, which cover most of it. Gold is its mineral wealth, above all gold and bauxite. White is the many rivers, the reason the name Guyana is usually explained as "land of many waters". Black is endurance, and red is the zeal and energy of a young nation building itself. The arrow shape is the country's forward thrust. The flag was raised for the first time at midnight on 26 May 1966, the moment Guyana became independent from Britain.

If the country is new to you: Guyana is on the South American mainland but counts itself Caribbean in language, food and cricket. Its capital is Georgetown, its people are mostly of Indian and African descent, and English is the official language, the only one in South America. The flag emoji is the quickest way Guyanese abroad have of saying so.

What does it mean when someone sends 🇬🇾?

Almost always: "I'm Guyanese" or "this is about Guyana". Guyana has fewer than a million people at home and a diaspora of comparable size, concentrated in New York (Richmond Hill in Queens is nicknamed Little Guyana), Toronto and London. For many of those families the flag in a bio or next to a name marks heritage, often alongside a second flag for where they live now. It does not mean the person lives in Guyana.

Beside a caption it marks a trip home, a plate of pepperpot or roti, a cricket match involving the West Indies or the Guyana Amazon Warriors, or a cousin's wedding in Berbice. On 26 May (Independence Day) and 23 February (Republic Day, celebrated with the Mashramani street festival) it appears in strings of three or more and simply means celebration.

In news and politics, especially since offshore oil made Guyana's economy one of the fastest growing in the world in the 2020s, the flag is a neutral label for the country. Nothing about it is loaded; the only real mistake is picking the wrong flag from the G section of the emoji keyboard.

Neutral and factual as a country label; warm and proud in personal posts. Never ironic or risky.

Worth knowing

  • The flag was designed by Whitney Smith, the American scholar who coined the word vexillology for the study of flags. His draft had no black and white borders; they were added before adoption in 1966.
  • Guyana is the only South American country where English is the official language, and the only one that plays Test cricket, as part of the West Indies team.

Questions people ask

4

Why do I see GY instead of the flag?

Your system does not have an image for this flag, so it shows the two letters it is built from. GY is Guyana's international two-letter code; the message is still the Guyanese flag on any phone that supports it.

Is Guyana the same as French Guiana?

No. Guyana is an independent country since 1966. French Guiana, further east beyond Suriname, is part of France and has its own emoji . The older spelling Guiana for the whole region is why the names look alike.

Why is the flag everywhere on 26 May?

It is Guyana's Independence Day, when the Golden Arrowhead was first raised in 1966. Guyanese at home and abroad post it in strings that day, and again on 23 February for Republic Day and the Mashramani festival.

Why does the flag turn up in news about Venezuela?

Venezuela claims the Essequibo region, about two thirds of Guyana's territory. The dispute is before the International Court of Justice, and the flag appears as a neutral label in posts about it.
