Flag: Mexico

164/259

🇲🇽 is the Mexican flag emoji: green, white and red stripes with an eagle on a cactus in the middle. People send it for Mexican pride and heritage, for the national football team El Tri, for a trip or a plate of tacos, and especially around Independence Day on 16 September. It suits Cinco de Mayo too, but 5 May is not Mexico's independence day, whatever it looks like from the United States.

What 🇲🇽 means

The flag of Mexico: a tricolour with the national coat of arms. Three vertical stripes, green at the pole, white, then red, and in the centre a golden eagle perched on a prickly-pear cactus (a nopal), gripping a snake in its beak and talon, on a rock in a lake. That picture is the founding legend of the Mexica, the people better known as the Aztecs: their god told them to settle where they saw an eagle on a cactus, and there, in 1325 by tradition, they built Tenochtitlan, the city that became Mexico City.

The colours come from independence. In 1821 the Army of the Three Guarantees marched under green, white and red for religion, independence and union; today they are commonly explained as hope, unity and the blood of the heroes, meanings the flag law doesn't fix but Mexican schools teach. The emblem is what makes the flag Mexican: without it the stripes are Italy's.

On many Windows PCs, as of 2026, this emoji appears as the two letters MX rather than a flag. The Mexican flag is stored as the letter codes M and X, which an emoji font turns into a banner, and the standard Windows emoji font leaves country pairs as letters. The sender still sent the flag, and most phones show it normally.

What does it mean when someone sends 🇲🇽?

Pride in Mexico, usually: roots, the team, food or a trip. In a profile bio it says where someone is from or where their family is from. On match day it means El Tri, the national football team, nicknamed after the tricolour. With a plane or a beach it is a holiday; with it is dinner.

The calendar matters. The flag is everywhere on the night of 15 September, when the president rings a bell and shouts El Grito, the cry of independence, and on 16 September itself. Mexico also keeps a Flag Day, Día de la Bandera, on 24 February. Cinco de Mayo, 5 May, marks the 1862 Battle of Puebla; it is celebrated mostly in the United States, as a party for Mexican-American culture, and in Mexico it is a minor date outside Puebla. 🇲🇽 fits it fine, but greeting Mexican friends that day as if it were their Independence Day can earn a gentle correction.

Warm and proud; fine from anyone for food, travel or cheering, and a serious identity marker in a bio.

Don't treat 5 May as Mexico's national day; the real one is 16 September.

Worth knowing

  • Some early pictures of the Mexica founding sign show the eagle on the cactus with no snake at all; the snake became standard later, in colonial times, and is fixed by law today.

Questions people ask

2

Is the Mexican flag emoji for Cinco de Mayo?

It can be. Cinco de Mayo marks the 1862 Battle of Puebla and is mostly a US celebration of Mexican culture. Mexico's national day is 16 September, Independence Day, and its Flag Day is 24 February. 🇲🇽 fits all three; just don't call 5 May Independence Day.

Can I use 🇲🇽 if I'm not Mexican?

Yes. For a trip, a meal, a football match or a friend's birthday it reads as friendly interest. Only in a bio does it claim heritage, so leave it out there unless it's yours.
