flag: Brazil

The Brazil flag emoji marks a tie to Brazil: nationality, home, a trip, or cheering the national football team. In Brazilian political posts it can also read as partisan, so the words around it matter. Where flag emoji aren't supported, it often shows up as the letters โ€œBRโ€.

What ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท means

Usually: Brazil is their home, destination, or team.

Around elections the reading can change. During Brazil's 2022 presidential campaign, the flag and its green-and-yellow colors became campaign imagery, and the emoji picked up a right-wing association in many online profiles, while others kept using it to reclaim it as everyone's symbol. Don't guess someone's politics from the flag alone; read the words beside it.

Why is Brazil's flag green and yellow?

The colors began as royal family markers.

Brazil's first national flag was decreed in September 1822, when the then Prince Regent Pedro made his personal banner the flag of the newly independent nation; its design is credited to the French artist Jean-Baptiste Debret. Green stood for Pedro's family, the Braganรงa dynasty, and yellow for the Habsburg-Lorraine house of his wife.

When Brazil became a republic in 1889, it kept the green field and yellow diamond but swapped the imperial crown for a blue starry globe with the motto โ€œOrdem e Progressoโ€ (Order and Progress). The popular reading of the colors as forests and gold came later.

Why does the Brazil flag show as letters BR?

Your device or app can't draw flag emoji.

There is no single Brazil-flag character. The emoji is two special regional indicator letters, B and R, spelling Brazil's two-letter country code, and flag-aware fonts merge them into one picture. Without flag support, systems often display the letters โ€œBRโ€ or a generic missing-flag symbol; Windows' built-in emoji font draws no country flags as of 2026. The sender's message still arrived intact.

Friendly and ordinary in everyday use; in Brazilian political threads it can read as a partisan badge.

In a Brazilian political post, don't assume it's only a country tag.

Worth knowing

  • The characters behind ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท existed in Unicode 5 years before anyone was allowed to draw them in colour: Unicode 6.0 in 2010, emoji presentation in 2015.
  • ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท is not one character. It is 2 of them glued together, which is why deleting it sometimes takes two presses of backspace and why it breaks character counters.
