Cricket

🏏 is the cricket emoji: a cricket bat and ball, usually drawn as a flat wooden bat beside a red ball. People send it about a match, a team they support, or plans to play or watch. It is not baseball, and it is not the chirping insect cricket, which is 🦗.

What 🏏 means

A bat-and-ball team sport; the flat bat is its signature. Two teams of eleven take turns to bat and to field. A bowler delivers the ball toward a batter guarding the wicket (three wooden stumps topped by two small bails); the batter hits it and runs between the wickets to score runs, while the fielding side tries to get them out. Matches range from Test matches of up to five days to Twenty20 games of about three hours. Cricket draws vast followings in South Asia, above all India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and is a major sport in England, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and the Caribbean.

The equipment explains the picture. A cricket bat has a flat wooden blade, traditionally willow, on a short round handle: more paddle than the round baseball bat. The hard leather ball has a raised stitched seam and is traditionally red; white balls are used in shorter, limited-overs formats. Artwork varies by platform, but most designs show that flat blade and seamed ball.

What does 🏏 mean when someone sends it?

Cricket is on, or they'd like it to be. It is plain shorthand for the sport: "🏏 tonight?" usually invites you to watch or play, a flag or team name beside it signals support, and after a win it often travels with 🏆 or 🔥. It has no slang double meaning. The one practical risk is a reader who doesn't know the game; for them, write the word "cricket" too.

Plain and sporty: match talk, team support and friendly banter.

In English, "cricket" is also an insect. The bug is 🦗; 🏏 is only the sport.

Questions people ask

2

Can I use 🏏 for baseball or softball?

Better not. Baseball has ⚾ and softball has 🥎. Cricket fans will read 🏏 as cricket, so using it for baseball invites confusion.

Is cricket India's national sport?

Not officially. India's government has not declared any national sport, but cricket is the country's most followed game, and 🏏 turns up constantly in Indian sports chat.
