What ๐ means
It means a day at the races, riding, or moving fast.
In literal use, it covers everything around the track: watching a big race or race meeting like the Kentucky Derby, Royal Ascot or the Melbourne Cup, dressing up for a race meet, placing a bet on a horse, or going horseback riding for the afternoon. Unicode has no separate trail-riding or show-jumping emoji, so this jockey sometimes gets borrowed for riding in general.
In everyday chat, the galloping rider stands in for speed and urgency. Someone texting that they are "on the way ๐" or finishing a project "at a full gallop" is just saying they are hurrying or charging ahead.

6Worth knowing
- When Unicode unified Japanese phone carriers' emoji in 2009, three carriers' horse pictures were grouped here, even though SoftBank's showed no rider at all. Unicode kept this character for the mounted jockey.
Questions people ask
2Does the skin tone change the horse?
No. The skin-tone modifier colors only the jockey. On many phones the rider is so covered by racing gear that little skin shows, and the five tones can look nearly identical on small screens.
Are there separate man and woman jockey emoji?
No. ๐ has skin-tone variants but no man or woman versions; the single rider figure serves for any jockey.
