What 🏌️ means
Usually not — read it as golf unless the thread says otherwise. Next to a course photo, scorecard or weekend plan, it is just golf. The flirty reading, "shooting my shot" (taking a bold chance with someone), only fits when 🏌️ arrives alone right after the sender asked you out or said something daring. Even then it is a wink at their own nerve, not a declaration.
Where did the golfer picture come from?
It was carried over from older icon sets. A 2012 Unicode conversion table maps a golfer picture from Webdings, a Microsoft symbol font, into standard text, so the icon would survive moving between systems. The game itself is far older: Scotland's earliest written mention is a 1457 law banning golf because it pulled people away from required archery practice.
Friendly sports talk almost everywhere; flirty only when the thread already is.
Right after an ask-out, it reads as owning the move, not changing the subject.

2Worth knowing
- 🏌️ is not one character. It is 2 of them glued together, which is why deleting it sometimes takes two presses of backspace and why it breaks character counters.
Questions people ask
2Why does the golfer emoji look black and white?
Missing style marker. U+1F3CC alone may be drawn as a plain text-style outline; with the invisible emoji selector U+FE0F after it, apps choose colour artwork. It is the same golf symbol either way.
Why does the woman golfing emoji show as a golfer plus a ♀ sign?
Your system lacks the combined form. Man and woman golfers are built from the golfer, an invisible joiner and a ♂️ or ♀️ sign; without support, the pieces show side by side.
