What 🏀 means
A Springfield College indoor game from 1891. James Naismith, an instructor there, invented it for students stuck inside during a Massachusetts winter. The first targets were peach baskets nailed to the balcony rail, so the ball had to be fetched after every score until the bottoms were cut out; real nets came later. He wrote thirteen original rules, and YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) gyms helped spread the game internationally.
