What 🏄 means
A surfer riding a wave on a board, nothing hidden behind it. Most platforms draw a figure crouched or standing on a short board with a curl of blue water underneath. This plain form is meant to be gender-neutral; and are the man and woman forms, and all of them take the five skin tones, which is why the family has 18 variants.
Because there is no separate emoji for windsurfing, kitesurfing, bodyboarding or paddleboarding, 🏄 does duty for all of them. If a friend who has never touched a surfboard posts it from a lake, they probably mean a windsurfer or a stand-up paddleboard. Read it as "board on water" rather than strictly "surfing".
What does it mean when someone sends 🏄?
Usually that they are surfing, going surfing, or wish they were. In a chat it reports an activity: "waves are good 🏄", "back from Bali 🏄". In a bio or profile it labels a hobby and an identity, the relaxed, outdoorsy, up-at-dawn type. Alongside holiday photos it just means beach, sun and a good time.
The tone is always upbeat and casual. It has no insulting or suggestive meaning, so it is safe to send to anyone. The one playful twist is the pun on "surfing the web": paired with or the word "browsing" it can mean idly clicking around online, a joke that works because the English idiom is so common.
Where surfing comes from
Surfing is a Polynesian tradition that is many centuries old. Hawaiians call it heʻe nalu, roughly "wave sliding". In old Hawaiʻi it was recreation, but also bound up with rank and religion: chiefs had their own boards and breaks, and prayers accompanied the making of a board. The first European description comes from Joseph Banks, who watched Tahitians riding waves in 1769 during Cook's voyage; Pacific peoples had been doing it long before anyone wrote it down.
Missionaries and colonial settlers discouraged surfing in the 19th century, and it nearly disappeared. It came back in the early 20th century and went global largely through Duke Kahanamoku, a Hawaiian Olympic swimming champion whose demonstrations in California and Australia in the 1910s turned curious crowds into surfers. From there grew the beach culture, the music and the slang ("hang ten", toes over the nose of the board) that the emoji now stands for.
The picture itself is older than Unicode's emoji: SoftBank's Japanese phone emoji set already had a surfer in 1998, and when the carriers' incompatible picture codes were unified in 2010, the surfer came along.
Casual, sunny and friendly; fine for anyone from a group chat to a work channel celebrating someone's holiday.

3Worth knowing
- Surfing became an Olympic sport at the Tokyo 2020 Games, held in 2021, with the first medals decided on Japan's Pacific coast.
- "Hang ten" means riding a longboard with all ten toes hooked over its nose, one of the sport's showpiece moves and a phrase that outgrew it.
Questions people ask
3Does 🏄 mean surfing the internet?
It can be. English speakers "surf the web", so the emoji works as a visual pun next to a laptop or talk of browsing. On its own, though, it means the sport; nobody will read it as web browsing without a hint.
Is there a windsurfing or kitesurfing emoji?
No. 🏄 is the closest, and people use it for windsurfing, kitesurfing, bodyboarding and paddleboarding alike. Add for kitesurfing or for wind if you want to be clearer.
Why does the surfer look like a man on some phones?
Older artwork drew the plain surfer as a man. Most platforms switched to a neutral figure by the late 2010s, and as of 2026 nearly all show one, but the receiver's phone still draws its own version. Use or if gender matters.
