Person Swimming

It shows someone swimming, and it means swimming in any form. Most designs draw a swimmer doing front crawl (freestyle): head turned to breathe, one arm reaching over the water, a splash behind. Many add a swim cap and goggles, and some put the figure in a marked lane, which gives it a slightly sporty, pool-training look rather than a splash-about-in-the-sea feel.

That sporty look is no accident. 🏊 came in with the batch of sports figures that Japanese phone carriers had drawn for their emoji sets, alongside the runner, cyclist, golfer and surfer, and they entered Unicode together in 2010. In practice the emoji covers the whole range: lap swimming and swim-team posts, a dip on holiday, a kids' lesson, open-water or triathlon swims, and the Olympics every four years when swimming fills everyone's feeds.

It also works as a picture for the idiom "swimming in" something. "Swimming in emails 🏊" or "sink or swim 🏊" reads instantly, because the figure is calm and in control, unlike a drowning or splashing image.

What does it mean when someone sends you 🏊?

They are swimming, about to swim, or wish they were. On its own it is a status update: "off to the pool", "done my laps", "beach today". With a time or a number ("7am 🏊", "2k 🏊") it is a training log. Fitness posts often tag a swim session this way, and the three-part run 🏊🚴🏃 is the standard shorthand for a triathlon.

From a parent it usually means a child's swimming lesson or a pool birthday party. From a friend on holiday it means water and sunshine, and it often travels with ☀️, 🏖️ or 🌊. In a reply to a stressed message it is the joke reading: "swimming in it", keeping your head above water.

The tone is upbeat and energetic. It rarely carries hidden meaning, so take it at face value: someone is getting wet, on purpose, and probably feeling good about it.

Why does 🏊 sometimes show a man and sometimes a woman?

Because 🏊 is a family of 18 forms, and the plain one is now gender-neutral. For its first years the single 🏊 was drawn as a man on most phones. In 2016 Unicode added explicit man 🏊‍♂️ and woman 🏊‍♀️ versions, built by joining the swimmer to the male or female sign with an invisible joiner, and the base character was relabelled "person swimming" so that the plain figure could be drawn without a fixed gender. Each of the three can take five skin tones, which gives the full set of 18.

On a phone keyboard the man, woman and neutral swimmers usually appear as separate entries, and a long press on any of them opens the skin-tone choices. If a friend's swimmer looks different from yours, that is simply their phone's drawing or a different member of the family, not a different emoji.
