What 🤻 means
It means modern pentathlon, a sport with five disciplines.
An ancient pentathlon is recorded at the 18th Olympiad in 708 BC, but the modern event was created much later. It entered the Olympic programme at Stockholm in 1912. French Olympic founder Pierre de Coubertin designed it around the skills of a military courier: fencing, swimming, riding, running and pistol shooting.
The event’s format changed over time: in 1996 the Olympic competition became a one-day event; in 2009 running and shooting were combined; after Paris 2024, riding gave way to an obstacle event. 🤻 names the sport, not one permanent lineup of five events.
Why does 🤻 look like a horse?
Some fonts draw a horse and rider, which can hide the sport.
Unicode’s 2016 review marked 🤻 as neither an emoji character nor an emoji-presentation character. Its appearance depends on the font: a 2018 Noto Sans Symbols 2 report showed a horse and rider without a clear pentathlon cue.
When the exact sport matters, name it in words; the drawing alone can be mistaken for horse racing.
A literal, specialist sports reference; the horse-and-rider drawing does not show the full event.
If the drawing could be mistaken for horse racing, name modern pentathlon in the message.

2Is 🤻 an emoji?
No. Unicode classifies it as a text character without standard emoji presentation, so some emoji keyboards may not offer it.
Why does 🤻 sometimes appear as a box?
The selected font or app may not have a glyph for 🤻; the box indicates a display failure, not another meaning.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
