Ring Buoy

2/9

🛟 is the ring buoy, the orange-and-white life ring hung on ships, piers and pools to throw to someone in the water. In messages it means rescue, help or a lifeline: "you saved me", "I've got you", "throw me a lifeline". It is usually an offer of support or a thank-you, though in the right words it can be a plea for help.

What 🛟 means

A life ring: a floating ring you throw to someone in the water. The emoji shows a ring buoy, also called a lifebuoy, life preserver or life ring (lifebelt in British English). The real thing is a buoyant ring, usually of foam or plastic, finished in bright orange, red or white, with a grab line looped around its rim so a person in the water can hold on. You often see them on the railings of ferries and fishing boats, on piers and sea walls, and beside swimming pools, sometimes with a sign saying they are for emergencies only.

Unlike a life jacket, you don't wear it. Someone on dry land or on deck throws it to the person in trouble, which is why it stands for rescue that comes from outside: a friend, a stranger, a crew. The bright colour is there to be seen against water from a distance.

Long before it was an emoji, a little life ring was a common software icon for "Help" and "Support", so a lot of people already read it as "assistance" without thinking about boats at all. That habit feeds the emoji's meaning too.

What does it mean when someone sends 🛟?

Usually "I've got you" or "you saved me", depending on who helped whom. After a favour, 🛟 is thanks: you covered a shift, found the lost file, picked up the kids. As an offer, it goes with "call me whenever" or "I can lend you the money". Both readings are warm and sincere.

People also use it half-jokingly about themselves before a deadline, exam or awkward meeting: "someone throw me a lifeline 🛟". And it marks whatever keeps a person afloat, from a best friend to the first coffee of the morning. In chats about boats, swimming, lifeguards or beach safety, it just means the ring itself.

What it isn't is a formal alarm. On its own, 🛟 reads as help offered or acknowledged; when someone uses it to ask for help, the words around it make that clear. For urgency people tend to add , and real danger calls for emergency services, not an emoji.

Warm and supportive, with a self-mocking edge when sent about yourself. Fine with friends, family and colleagues alike.

It is not an alarm signal. 🛟 usually offers or thanks for help; read it as a plea only when the words say so.

  • The ring is sometimes called a Kisbee ring, after Thomas Kisbee, a British naval officer of the 1800s credited with inventing it.

Questions people ask

3

Is 🛟 the same as a life jacket?

No. A life jacket is worn; a ring buoy is thrown to a person already in the water. The nearest emoji, , is officially a safety vest and usually looks like a high-visibility one.

Does 🛟 mean SOS or emergency?

Not by itself. It usually reads as help offered or received, though words like "help me" turn it into a plea. People often add to make urgency unmistakable.

Why does my phone not show the orange ring?

It arrived with Emoji 14.0 in 2021, so older phones and some apps show a blank box or a question mark instead. Updating the system or the app usually fixes it.
