flag: El Salvador

El Salvador flag

217/259

🇸🇻 is the flag of El Salvador, the smallest country in Central America: two blue stripes around a white one, with the national coat of arms in the middle. People send it to say “Salvadoran”, whether that means their roots, a trip, a plate of pupusas or the national football team. If you only see the letters SV, your device has no flag image for it.

What 🇸🇻 means

It stands for El Salvador, or for being Salvadoran.

Most of the time the flag is a badge of identity. El Salvador has a large diaspora, above all in the United States, so you will often meet 🇸🇻 in a profile next to a second flag: it says “my family is from there, I grew up here”. Salvadorans call themselves guanacos, and the flag is how that pride looks in a bio. Around 15 September, Independence Day, feeds fill with blue and white.

The words around it narrow it down. Next to a ball it cheers La Selecta, the national football team. Next to food it means Salvadoran cooking, especially pupusas, thick corn or rice tortillas stuffed with cheese, beans or pork, the national dish. Next to a photo it marks a trip to San Salvador, the capital, or to the volcanoes and surf beaches the country is known for.

Sent alone, it simply answers “which country?”. It carries affection or pride, not a political position, and one flag never proves where a person lives or what passport they hold.

What does the flag show, and why does it look like Nicaragua’s?

Blue, white, blue: the colours of the old Central American federation.

After independence from Spain in 1821, five provinces (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica) formed the Federal Republic of Central America under a blue-white-blue flag. The union broke up within two decades, but all five countries kept its colours, which is why 🇸🇻, , and the others are so often mixed up. The blue is usually explained as the two oceans on either side of the isthmus, the white as peace.

What sets El Salvador apart is the centre. The coat of arms is a triangle with five volcanoes rising from the sea, one for each founding state, topped by a red liberty cap and a rainbow, with the date 15 September 1821 inside. Around it run five flags, fourteen bunches of laurel for the country’s fourteen departments, and the motto “Dios, Unión, Libertad” (God, Union, Liberty). Flags flown by ordinary people often carry just that motto in gold letters instead of the full arms; the emoji shows the state version with the arms.

Warm, proud and everyday; it reads as affection for the country rather than a political statement.

Don’t mistake it for Nicaragua’s or Honduras’s flag; the stripes match, the centre doesn’t.

Worth knowing

  • From 1865 to 1912 El Salvador’s flag copied the US design: blue and white stripes with a red canton full of stars, one per department. The 1912 flag went back to the federation colours.
  • El Salvador is nicknamed “El Pulgarcito de América”, the Tom Thumb of the Americas: it is the smallest country on the American mainland and the only Central American one with no Caribbean coast.

Questions people ask

3

Why do I see SV instead of a flag?

That is a display fallback. The emoji is really two letter symbols, S and V, El Salvador’s country code. As of 2026 Windows and some apps have no flag images and show the letters instead; the recipient on a phone will still see the flag.

Is 🇸🇻 the flag of San Salvador?

Not of the city. San Salvador is El Salvador’s capital, and 🇸🇻 is the national flag. It has nothing to do with Salvador in Brazil either.

What does “Dios, Unión, Libertad” mean?

“God, Union, Liberty”. It is El Salvador’s national motto, written in the coat of arms and, in gold letters, across the white stripe of the civil flag that ordinary people fly.
