Honduras flag emoji 🇭🇳: copy and paste, and what the five stars mean

The Honduras flag emoji is not one character but two regional indicator letters, and , for the country code HN; phones and apps that know the pair draw the flag. Windows is the usual exception: its emoji font has no country flags, so on a Windows PC may show as the letters HN. Nothing is lost, and the flag appears when the same text is opened on a phone or a Mac. There is no separate emoji for Roatán or the Bay Islands, so islanders use too.

The flag has three horizontal stripes, blue, white and blue, with five blue five-pointed stars arranged in an X in the middle. The flag was first adopted in 1866; its current star arrangement was set in 1949. The stripes come from the flag of the Federal Republic of Central America, and the five stars stand for its five members, Guatemala , El Salvador , Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica , and for the hope that they might one day unite again. The two blue stripes are usually read as the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, the two coasts of Honduras, and the white as the land between them and the peace of its people. The shade of blue has varied over the years: flags have used both deep navy and turquoise; a 1949 decree specified turquoise, the state officially returned to it in 2021–2022, and in 2026 the new Congress began displaying navy blue again; the emoji's blue simply depends on the font of your phone or app.

The flags of El Salvador and Nicaragua share the same blue-white-blue from the old federation, but each carries a coat of arms in the centre; only Honduras has the five stars. A "Honduras heart flag" is either or the hearts in stripe order, , or for the turquoise flag; for bios and usernames and do the same job. Honduras celebrates Flag Day on 1 September, the start of the patriotic month that ends in the Independence Day parades.

Honduras national symbols and meanings: the macaw, the deer and the pine

The national bird is the scarlet macaw, the guara roja, red, yellow and blue, and the emoji for it is . Macaws fly free again over the Maya ruins of Copán, where carved stone macaw heads decorate the ancient ball court, so is the emoji for Copán as much as for the bird. The national mammal is the white-tailed deer , and the national tree is the pine , commonly identified as the ocote pine (Pinus oocarpa), widespread in Honduras. The national flower is an orchid, Rhyncholaelia digbyana, with a frilled pale-green lip; there is no orchid emoji, so people describe it in words.

The coat of arms shows a triangle with a volcano between two towers like little castles , a rainbow and a rising sun above them, set on land between two seas . Around it runs the inscription República de Honduras, Libre, Soberana e Independiente, 15 de septiembre de 1821, and below it stand pines and oaks and the tools of the mines ; Tegucigalpa began as a silver-mining town.

Hondurans call themselves catrachos and catrachas, a nickname usually traced to General Florencio Xatruch, whose troops fought William Walker's filibusters in Nicaragua in the 1850s. The national football team is La H or la Bicolor, so and "¡Vamos, Catrachos!" are the match-day message, and follows when the goal goes in.

Honduras currency symbol L and the Spanish letters ñ, á, ü, ¿, ¡

The currency is the lempira (code HNL), written with a capital L before the amount, as in L 500 or L500.00; in shops and ads you also see the abbreviation Lps. for lempiras. It replaced the peso in 1931 and is named after Lempira, the Lenca leader who led the resistance against the Spanish conquest in the 1530s; his portrait is on the one-lempira note. There is no lempira emoji, so stands in for money in general, and people often just say pisto.

Spanish is the language of Honduras, spoken by about 8.7 million people by CLDR's estimate, out of a population of roughly 9.9 million in 2024. Writing it needs the acute accents á é í ó ú, the ñ of hondureño and señor, the ü that keeps the u audible after g, as in Comayagüela, Tegucigalpa's twin city, and the opening marks ¿ and ¡. The accent marks the stressed syllable and often tells words apart: Copán and Roatán are stressed at the end, and papá (dad) is a different word from papa (potato). Hondurans use vos among friends (vos sos, "you are"), and everyday words like cipote (kid), pisto (money) and ¡qué macizo! (how great!) mark Honduran Spanish.

To type them on Windows, hold Alt and type on the number pad: Alt160 á, Alt130 é, Alt161 í, Alt162 ó, Alt163 ú, Alt129 ü, Alt164 ñ, Alt165 Ñ, Alt168 ¿ and Alt173 ¡. On a Mac press OptionE and then the vowel for an acute accent, OptionN then n for ñ, OptionU then u for ü, Option1 for ¡ and OptionShift? for ¿. On a phone, hold the plain letter (a, n, u, ? or !) and pick the accented form from the pop-up. Honduras also has English speakers, about 42,000 by CLDR's estimate, mostly on the Bay Islands of Roatán, Utila and Guanaja, and indigenous and Afro-descendant languages such as Garifuna and Miskito; see the Spanish and English collections for the full alphabets.

Pickled chiles sit on many tables, and mangoes , pineapples and bananas grow in the hot lowlands.
