What 🎄 means
Christmas and the holiday season. The decorated tree pins your message to Christmas rather than to any party. Your words decide whether it's about lights and ornaments, gifts, or simply wishing someone a merry Christmas.
In some places the decorated fir is a New Year tree as much as a Christmas one, as in Ukraine, where Soviet-era New Year trees left their mark. There the same emoji can also say “happy New Year”.
Where did the decorated tree come from?
From German-speaking Christmas customs, centuries before emoji. Alsace, a region now in France, has some of the earliest records of Christmas trees, from around 1500. A 1605 Strasbourg account describes firs set up in homes and hung with apples and sweets; candles caught on gradually.
The custom spread across Europe during the 1800s. An 1848 engraving of Queen Victoria's family around a tree made it fashionable in Britain, and an American magazine reprinted the scene in 1850. The emoji itself came from Japanese mobile-phone emoji sets, where Christmas is a largely secular season of street illuminations.
Friendly and festive; at home in invitations, captions and family chats.
Sent in July without context, 🎄 reads Christmas-obsessed unless the joke is obvious.

Questions people ask
1Is the Christmas tree emoji religious?
It can be. The tree grew out of folk custom and many people send 🎄 as a secular seasonal greeting, but churches also display trees with Christian meaning. The sender's context decides.
