Fog

A cloud sitting on the ground, drawn as drifting grey streaks. That is what fog is: tiny water droplets hanging in the air near the surface. Forecasters call it fog when you can see less than a kilometre and mist when you can see further; in everyday chat nobody keeps that line, and 🌫️ covers both, plus haze, smog and any murky grey air.

Every phone draws it as plain layered haze with no landscape underneath, which is the quickest way to tell it from the foggy-bridge emoji. It turns up in weather updates, road and ferry warnings, airport delays, autumn and early-morning photo captions, and anywhere someone wants a soft, muffled, slightly eerie mood.

Why did someone send me 🌫️?

Read the words around it: weather first, mood second. After driving, a flight, a school run or a forecast, it means real fog outside and probably a slower or cancelled plan. Under a photo it is atmosphere, not a feeling report.

After a late night, a hangover, a long illness or a stressful week, it means brain fog: the sender feels dazed, forgetful and slow. "In a fog" and "brain fog" are ordinary English, and the second became an everyday phrase in the 2020s when people described long COVID with it. Sent alone with no words, it stays deliberately hazy: unsure, distant, drifting off. It is not a sadness emoji; ask what is foggy before you read grief into it.
