Fall emoji meanings: 🍂 🍁 🍃 and the rest of the leaves

Fallen leaf is the autumn emoji. It shows two or three brown leaves drifting down, and on its own it means the season, a cosy mood or simply "it's October". Maple leaf is the red one; it is also the symbol of Canada, which is why it turns up in Canada Day posts in July and doubles as the Canadian Thanksgiving emoji in October. Leaf fluttering in wind is green and reads as a breeze or fresh air; put it after and the pair becomes leaves blowing off a tree. Sheaf of rice stands for any ripe grain and the harvest itself.

The trees finish the picture: deciduous tree is the one that will lose its leaves, evergreen tree is the one that will not, and leafless tree, added in 2024, is what the first one looks like by late November. All three leaf emoji date from Unicode 6.0 in 2010, carried over from Japanese phone emoji, so they show up on every device you can think of.

Pumpkins, apples and the harvest

There is no plain pumpkin emoji. Jack-o-lantern is a carved one, so it leans Halloween, but it is what everyone uses for pumpkin patches, pumpkin spice and pumpkin pie, usually next to . Apple picking is , the vineyard harvest is and , and the woods give chestnut and mushroom (with the realistic brown mushroom for foraging). There is no acorn emoji either, which is why does acorn duty in squirrel jokes.

The field crops are corn, roasted sweet potato, potato, carrot, the new root vegetable (a beet or turnip), onion, peanuts and beans, and sunflower is the late-summer flower that is still standing in September. basket, jar (for jam, pickles and preserves), honey, tractor and farmer are the people and tools bringing it all in.

Cosy fall emoji: sweater weather, hot drinks and staying in

Half of what people mean by "fall vibes" is being warm while it is cold outside. hot beverage is coffee, tea, cider or a pumpkin spice latte depending on context, is green tea, the teapot and stands in for hot chocolate. pie, cookies, stew and soup or porridge cover comfort food.

The clothes arrived together in 2017: scarf, gloves, coat and socks, joined by boots and hiking boots. For the night in, fire plus wood makes a fireplace, candle adds the light, and couch, bed, knitting, teddy bear and books say what you are doing there. relieved face is the face for all of it.

Rain, fog, wind and the harvest moon

Autumn weather has its own emoji row: cloud with rain, umbrella with rain drops, and for the umbrella itself, fog and foggy (a bridge in mist) for grey mornings, wind face and for the gusts that strip the trees, and for every kind of overcast. sunset is golden hour.

full moon is the harvest moon, the full moon closest to the September equinox, which rises soon after sunset for several evenings in a row and once gave farmers extra light to bring crops in. In East Asia the same moon is the centre of the Mid-Autumn Festival: moon cake, lantern, and in Japan moon viewing ceremony (Tsukimi), which shows the moon over pampas grass with a stack of dango.

Autumn animals, colours and text symbols

The woodland crowd is hedgehog, owl, chipmunk (the only squirrel emoji there is), fox, deer, moose and bear fattening up before winter, with turkey for November, goose and black bird for the birds heading south or staying put, and feather for what they leave behind. are for the last camping trip and the leaf-peeping walk.

For an autumn palette, read the colour grid downwards: hearts, then the same colours as circles and squares. Orange and brown hearts are the two most used, and only exists since 2019. Where colour emoji are stripped out or you want a quieter look, plain text symbols work: the printer's leaves (the classic hedera or ivy-leaf ornament), the eight pointing leaves (many phones still show them as a box), the crescents , the weather sign for rain, the mahjong flower tiles autumn and chrysanthemum, and the kanji 秋 autumn, 楓 maple, 葉 leaf, 椛 (a Japan-made character read momiji, autumn leaves) and 穫 harvest.

Worth knowing

  • Both words are old: "autumn" reached English from Latin through French in the 1300s, and "fall", short for "fall of the leaf", followed in the 1500s. Britain kept autumn and America kept fall.
  • Leaves do not turn yellow and orange so much as reveal it: those pigments are there all summer under the green chlorophyll, which breaks down in autumn. Red comes from pigments the tree makes fresh in the cold weeks.
  • There is no acorn, scarecrow, rake, plain pumpkin or squirrel emoji. chestnut, jack-o-lantern and chipmunk cover for them.
  • The harvest moon is not the same date every year: it is the full moon closest to the September equinox, so it falls anywhere from early September to early October, and every few years it is an October moon.
  • The eight pointing leaves to come from the Ornamental Dingbats block added in Unicode 7.0 in 2014, modelled on old printers' ornaments, and most phone fonts still do not draw them.
