Peanuts

🥜 is the peanut emoji, usually drawn as a peanut in its shell. People send it for snacks, peanut butter, a bar or ballpark treat, and to flag a peanut allergy. In English it also means a tiny amount of money, as in “paid peanuts”, and some use it as a pun on “nuts” when someone is going crazy.

What 🥜 means

It means peanuts, and most of the time nothing more.

On most keyboards the picture is a whole peanut in its light-brown, ridged shell, sometimes with a second one beside it. People reach for it when they talk about food: a bowl of salted peanuts with a beer, peanut butter on toast, satay sauce, a baseball game, a recipe, or simply “I'm snacking”. Next to the word “allergy” or “nut-free” it marks the thing to avoid at a party, a school or a flight.

Money changes the reading. In English, “peanuts” is an old informal word for a laughably small sum, and “to pay peanuts” means to pay badly. So 🥜 after “my raise this year” or beside a job offer is a complaint, often sarcastic. If a friend answers your pay news with a lone 🥜, they think you are being underpaid, not that they want a snack.

Because “nuts” also means crazy, a few people drop 🥜 into “this week is driving me 🥜”. Readers who don't know that idiom will simply see a peanut, so the words around it do the work.

Is a peanut actually a nut?

No: it is a legume, a cousin of beans and lentils, that ripens underground.

The plant flowers above the soil, then pushes each fertilised stalk down into the ground, where the pod swells into the shell you know. That is why other languages call it “earth nut” or “ground nut” (German Erdnuss, Dutch aardnoot), and why Unicode files 🥜 among vegetables rather than next to 🌰 chestnut. It came from South America and is now grown across China, India, West Africa and the southern United States, where George Washington Carver famously promoted it as a crop.

The distinction matters in practice. Peanut allergy is one of the most common serious food allergies and can cause life-threatening reactions, which is why “nut-free” classrooms and airline snack policies exist. Someone allergic to peanuts is not automatically allergic to tree nuts like almonds, and the other way round, so when you use 🥜 to ask about a guest's allergy, ask about nuts too. And never let the picture carry the warning alone: write the word, because an emoji can be missed, misread or shown as a blank box on an old device.

Casual and playful around food; mildly scornful when it stands for money. Fine in any chat, odd in formal writing.

Never let 🥜 alone carry an allergy warning or a menu note; write the word so nobody misses it.

Worth knowing

  • A peanut plant buries its own seeds: after the flower is pollinated, the stalk bends down and drives the young pod into the soil, where it ripens in the dark.
  • In Hokkaido and northern Japan, families throw peanuts in the shell instead of soybeans at the Setsubun bean-throwing festival, because the shells keep them clean on the floor.

Questions people ask

3

Does 🥜 count as the nut emoji?

It is the closest thing to one. Unicode has no generic nut emoji; 🥜 for peanuts and 🌰 for chestnuts are the only choices, and 🥜 is what most people use to mean nuts in general.

Can 🥜 have a rude meaning?

It can be. Because “nuts” is slang for crazy, and also for testicles, 🥜 turns up in jokes that lean on either sense. Without such wording around it, it is just a peanut.

Should I send 🥜 to tell a host about my allergy?

Only alongside the words. Write “peanut allergy” clearly and use 🥜 as decoration if you like; a picture alone can be missed or displayed wrongly.
