What ๐ means
A lemon: the fruit, its sour taste, and the fresh, sunny feeling around it. The lemon is a small, oval citrus fruit with a bright yellow rind and sharply acidic juice. Almost nobody eats one like an apple; it goes into drinks, dressings, desserts, tea and fish dishes, and its scent is the default smell of "clean" in soaps and cleaning products. The emoji inherits all of that: it stands for the fruit itself, for lemonade and lemon-flavored anything, for sourness, for freshness and for the yellow of a Mediterranean summer.
Lemons matter to a lot of kitchens. They are everywhere in Italian, Greek, Turkish, Levantine and North African cooking, in Indian pickles and chutneys, in British lemon curd and American lemonade stands, and in the limoncello of the Amalfi coast, where lemon groves are a tourist attraction in their own right. So ๐ turns up in restaurant menus, bakery posts, cocktail recipes and the captions of anyone photographing a holiday in southern Italy.
The emoji is also a color and a mood. People pair it with , or in bios and captions to signal a bright, cheerful, yellow aesthetic, with no particular fruit in mind.
What does it mean when someone sends you ๐?
Usually something literal: food, a drink, a flavor, or "this is sour." In a chat about cooking or going out, ๐ is a lemon, a lemonade, a lemon tart or a slice in someone's gin and tonic. Sent on its own as a reaction, it most often means "sour", in the taste sense or the "that was a bitter pill" sense, like a shorthand for a puckered face.
English adds a sting. Since the early twentieth century, "a lemon" has meant something that turns out to be worthless, especially a car that keeps breaking down; several US states have "lemon laws" that force sellers to take faulty vehicles back. So under a post showing off a new car, phone or purchase, ๐ from an English speaker can mean "you bought a dud." Outside English this reading barely exists, and even in English the context has to point that way.
The other common figurative use is the proverb "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade": take a bad situation and make something good of it. Here ๐ is the bad luck, and or the word "lemonade" is the recovery. A friend who sends ๐ after you describe a rough week is sympathizing, not insulting you.
Light and literal almost everywhere; cheerful rather than loaded. The only edge is the English 'dud' reading, and that needs a purchase to land on.
Under someone's new car or phone, ๐ can read as 'you bought a lemon'. Add words if you mean the fruit.

7Worth knowing
- Lemons don't exist in the wild. The fruit is an ancient hybrid of the citron and the bitter orange, first grown in southern Asia and brought to the Mediterranean by Arab traders.
- The British navy once issued lemon juice to sailors against scurvy, then switched to limes; that is how British sailors, and later Britons in general, got the nickname 'limeys'.
Questions people ask
4Is sending someone the lemon emoji an insult?
Rarely. On its own it means a lemon, sourness or a cheerful yellow. Only under someone's new purchase, among English speakers, does it suggest they bought a dud.
Does ๐ mean something sexual?
Only in fan-fiction circles, where 'lemon' has long labelled stories with explicit sex scenes, so the emoji can tag one. Outside that world nobody reads it that way.
Why do Beyoncรฉ fans use the lemon emoji?
Because of her 2016 album Lemonade. Fans used ๐, often with for her 'Beyhive' fandom, as shorthand for it that year. It still reads that way among her fans, but not in general chat.
Is ๐ a lemon or a lime?
A lemon. Lime had no emoji of its own until 2023, so people used ๐ for both; now is lime. On older devices lime may still appear as a lemon beside a green square.
