Circus, Carnival & Fair Emoji

Circus emoji and carnival emoji are the big-top, funfair and parade pictures people put in invites, theme-park captions and jokes about chaos. The stars are Circus Tent, Clown Face, Person Juggling, Ferris Wheel and Roller Coaster; below them sit the carousel, the games and prizes, every fair food from to , the animals, the carnival parade and text stars like for posters and names.

The circus emoji everyone uses: 🎪 🤡 🤹 and the rides

Circus Tent is the circus emoji in the literal sense: a striped big top with a flag on the pole, part of the original 2010 emoji set (Unicode 6.0) along with Carousel Horse, Ferris Wheel, Roller Coaster, Performing Arts, Ticket, Balloon and Top Hat. On its own says "circus" or "the fair is in town"; with Admission Tickets (2014) it says you have seats for the show.

The performers came later. Clown Face, Person Juggling and Person Cartwheeling all arrived in Unicode 9.0 (2016), and has woman and man forms ( ) that most keyboards show on a long press. There is no ringmaster, acrobat or trapeze emoji, so people build them: Top Hat for the ringmaster, Magic Wand with Rabbit for the magician, and for the strongman, for the fire eater, and for the animal acts of old posters.

The three rides carry most funfair messages by themselves. is the gentle one, the carousel for small children; is the view over the fairground at night; is the thrill, which is why it doubles as a word for ups and downs ("what a roller coaster of a week "). Playground Slide (2021) covers the helter-skelter and Mirror (2020) stands in for the hall of mirrors.

Carnival emoji: funfair, Rio, Venice and Mardi Gras

"Carnival" means two different things, and the emoji split the same way. In American English a carnival is a travelling funfair, so carnival emoji are the rides, the game stalls and the food: . In Brazil, Italy and the Caribbean, Carnival is the parade season before Lent: Performing Arts for the Venetian mask, for the samba dancers, Feather for the costumes, for the drums and brass, for the carnival king and queen.

Mardi Gras in New Orleans adds its own three colours, purple, green and gold, which people write as next to and . For a Rio post, is the usual line; for Venice, . None of these has an emoji of its own, and "carnival mask emoji" in searches always lands on , the comedy-and-tragedy pair from Greek theatre.

Circus emoji meaning in chat: clownery, chaos and popcorn

Most of the time is not about a real circus. "This meeting is a circus ", "welcome to the circus " and "the whole family in one group chat " all mean chaos run by fools. does the same for a person: sent about someone else it calls them a clown; sent about yourself ("me, thinking he would text back ") it is self-mockery, which is the Gen Z sense people search for. A string of under a post is a verdict, not a joke.

Popcorn (Unicode 8.0, 2015) means you are watching drama unfold and enjoying it: "grabbing my popcorn ". with Monkey is the Polish proverb "not my circus, not my monkeys", a way of saying a mess is not your problem. means multitasking ("juggling three deadlines "), means an emotional ride, and means acting, two-faced behaviour or simply the theatre. If a guy or a girl sends out of nowhere, it is almost always a comment on a chaotic situation or an invitation to the fair, not a hidden code.

Fair food, games and prizes in emoji

Fair food is where the emoji set is richest. Popcorn, Lollipop, Candy, Soft Ice Cream, Shaved Ice, Doughnut, Waffle, Hot Dog, , for the giant turkey leg, Pretzel, Peanuts, Corn, Cup with Straw, for lemonade and for the beer tent. Some classics are missing: there is no cotton candy emoji as of Emoji 17.0 (2025), so people use or write it out; a candy apple is or ; a funnel cake is usually or .

The game stalls are Bullseye for darts and the shooting gallery, Water Pistol for the water race, for skittles and milk-bottle toss, Hook with Duck for hook-a-duck, and for the goldfish in a bag that used to be the prize. Teddy Bear is the big prize, the ribbons of a county fair, Coin and Ticket the tokens, and the arcade. A full day reads .

Circus symbols: text stars and pennants for posters and names

Old circus posters are built from starbursts, and Unicode has them as plain text: for the bursts, Pinwheel Star and for the framing stars, for the knife thrower's target, for the barrel organ and for the pennants on the tent ropes. Being text, they take the colour and weight of the font, so a Discord server name like 𝐂𝐈𝐑𝐂𝐔𝐒 or a bio line step right up stays crisp where emoji would look like stickers. The stars on their own are on the Star Symbols & Sparkle Emoji page.

To type the emoji, search the emoji keyboard for "circus", "carnival", "ferris" or "clown" on iPhone and Android; on Windows press the Windows key . (period), on a Mac Control Command Space. On Discord, Slack and GitHub the shortcodes are :circus_tent: for , :clown: for , :ferris_wheel:, :roller_coaster: and :carousel_horse:. Fans of The Amazing Digital Circus, the 2023 animated series, use for its characters, which is why "digital circus emoji combo" shows up next to the ordinary searches.

Worth knowing

  • The Ferris wheel is named after George Washington Gale Ferris Jr., whose 80-metre wheel was the centrepiece of the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, built to answer the Eiffel Tower of the Paris fair four years earlier. joined Unicode in 2010.
  • Roller coasters are "Russian mountains" in Spanish, French and Italian (montaña rusa, montagnes russes), after the ice slides of 18th-century St Petersburg. In Russian they are "American hills" (американские горки).
  • Clown Face was released in June 2016 with Unicode 9.0, a few months before the wave of "creepy clown" sightings that spread across the United States and beyond that autumn, which pushed the new emoji into everyday use faster than almost any other in its batch.
  • There is still no cotton candy emoji: none of the releases up to Emoji 17.0 (2025) added one, so Lollipop does the job on most fairground posts.
  • "Not my circus, not my monkeys" is a direct translation of the Polish saying nie mój cyrk, nie moje małpy, which is why the pairing reads as "not my problem" in English chats.
