🧃

beverage box

Beverage Box

🧃 is a juice box: a small drink carton with a straw poked in the top, the kind that goes in a child's lunch. People send it for snacks, packed lunches, picnics and anything cosy or childlike. Through the English slang word “juice” it can also mean energy or clout, and in hostile posts a few people use it as a coded jab, so read the words around it.

What 🧃 means

A small carton of drink with a straw, usually juice. Most platforms draw a little rectangular box, often with a piece of fruit on the label, and a bendy straw sticking out of the top. That is the lunchbox juice box familiar to anyone who went to school from the 1980s onward.

Its official Unicode name is “beverage box” rather than “juice box” because the same carton holds milk, chocolate milk or iced tea just as often as juice. In everyday use, though, nearly everyone calls it the juice box emoji and reads it as juice.

Its home turf is food talk: what is in the lunch bag, what to bring to the picnic, what the kids are drinking at the match. It also stands in for the whole world of childhood snacks, school trips and after-school hunger, which is why it turns up so often next to 🥪, 🍎 and 🎒.

What does it mean when someone sends 🧃?

Usually something small, sweet and a bit childlike. Because the juice box belongs to children, people use it to sound cosy, harmless or deliberately babyish: “stayed in with a blanket and a 🧃”, or “I am a small child, do not perceive me 🧃”. Among Gen Z it fits the soft, wholesome, slightly self-mocking tone that also uses 🧸 and 🩹. Offering someone a juice box in words (“do you need a juice box and a nap?”) is affectionate teasing: you are being treated like a cranky toddler.

English slang gives it a second life. To “have the juice” is to have energy, swagger or clout; someone “with the juice” is the one everyone listens to. So 🧃 next to praise or sports talk can mean “you've got it”. In gym and sports chat, “juiced” means on steroids, and a 🧃 beside an impossibly muscular photo is a knowing wink at that. These readings only work for English speakers, which is why they puzzle people reading in other languages.

One reading is worth knowing so it does not catch you out. In 2025 hate-monitoring groups and news reports documented people using 🧃, or the word “juice”, in hostile posts as a coded way of saying “Jews”, because the two words sound alike in English. That use is confined to antisemitic corners of social media and lives entirely on the surrounding words: slurs, conspiracy claims, talk of who “controls” things. A juice box in a message about lunch is a juice box.

Casual, sweet and a little childish; fine with friends and family, odd in anything formal.

In a hostile political post, 🧃 or “juice” can be an antisemitic code word; judge it by the surrounding words, never by the emoji alone.

Worth knowing

  • Unicode named it “beverage box”, not “juice box”, because the carton is just as often milk or iced tea. The name never caught on with ordinary users.
  • The straw-poked carton is a Tetra Pak-style aseptic package, a Swedish invention from the 1950s and 60s that let juice and milk sit unrefrigerated on a shelf, which is why it could live in a lunch bag all morning.

Questions people ask

3

Is 🧃 apple juice or orange juice?

It depends on the platform. The fruit on the carton differs between phones and apps, and many show no particular fruit, so do not rely on it to mean one flavour.

What does “do you need a juice box?” mean?

Gentle teasing. It treats the other person like a cranky toddler who needs a drink and a nap, usually because they are being grumpy or dramatic. Sent with 🧃, it is almost always affectionate.

Is it safe to send 🧃?

Yes, in ordinary conversation. Only in heated political threads can it be misread, because of the coded use described above; there, a word or two of context removes any doubt.
