What 🍑 means

Butt, unless food context points to fruit. That's why people call it the butt emoji: round cheeks plus a centre crease read as booty. In a 2019 message-rating experiment, a peach sent with no earlier message was rated highly sexual; a grocery message before it weakened that reading but left people disagreeing more.

It started as plain fruit. Unicode's emoji proposals of 2007 and 2008 mapped it from the icon sets of Japanese mobile carriers, where it was labelled モモ (momo, Japanese for “peach”), so phones on different networks could exchange the same pictures.

In Chinese decorative art the peach means long life, echoing the legend of the Queen Mother of the West and her peaches of immortality. A porcelain jar dated 1522–1566 shapes a peach-tree trunk into 壽 (shòu, “longevity”), and peaches remain a birthday motif. None of that touches the emoji slang.

Why did someone send me a peach emoji?

Usually a flirt or a compliment on your backside. Sent solo under a gym or beach photo, or with or , it's praise for a body. Keep the fruit reading only when the rest of the message is about groceries, baking or a market haul.

Age shifts the reading. In the same 2019 experiment, younger participants and those more familiar with emoji rated the peach and eggplant as more sexual, so a peach from an older relative talking about pie is probably pie.

Playful in private flirting; risky anywhere a body comment hasn't been invited.

Without a food cue, a peach can land as an unsolicited comment on the recipient's body.

Drift: In 2016 Apple's iOS 10.2 beta redrew the peach to look less like a butt. People objected, and a later beta brought the cleft back.
