The pink emoji everyone uses: pink heart, bow and cherry blossom
Pink Heart is the newest and most asked-for of the pink emoji. It joined Unicode with Emoji 15.0 in September 2022, after years of requests, and reached iPhones with iOS 16.4 in March 2023. Before it existed, people made do with the hearts that had always been pink: Sparkling Heart, Growing Heart, Beating Heart, Two Hearts and Revolving Hearts, pink since the original Japanese phone designs. Heart with Arrow and Heart with Ribbon are pink too, Heart Decoration is a white heart on a pink tile, and Love Letter is an envelope sealed with a heart. The Heart Emoji & Symbols collection walks through every colour; here they are sorted by one.
What a pink heart means depends on who sends it, but it is reliably softer than red. From a girl or a guy it reads as affection, a crush, thanks or simply "this is cute", not a declaration. On Snapchat, Pink Hearts next to a name means the two of you have been each other's number one best friend for two months straight, the step above the red heart. adds excitement, is a heart that is growing on you, and says the feeling runs both ways.
Ribbon is a pink bow on every major platform. It is the emoji behind "pink bow emoji", the coquette look and the pookie nickname, and in October it doubles as the pink ribbon of breast cancer awareness. Cherry Blossom is the pink flower emoji, the sakura of Japanese spring, and the quickest way to make a line look soft. With the three make the pink starter kit: . The blushing faces go with them: Smiling Face with Hearts, with its rosy cheeks, Flushed Face and giggling behind a hand.
Pink animals, flowers, sweets and things
Nature supplies the animals: Flamingo, Pig Face with Pig and Pig Nose, Unicorn with its pink and purple mane, Jellyfish, Coral, Shrimp and the little Worm. Among flowers, is joined by Tulip (pink on an iPhone, red on some Android phones), Hibiscus, Lotus, Bouquet and White Flower, which despite its name is drawn with pink petals or pink edges, because it shows the flower-shaped stamp Japanese teachers put on good work. The Flower Emoji & Symbols collection has every bloom; these are the pink ones.
Food is where pink runs wild: Peach, Strawberry, the pink flesh of Watermelon, Bubble Tea for a strawberry milk tea run, Shaved Ice under its syrup, Ice Cream, Doughnut with pink frosting, Cupcake, Shortcake, Birthday Cake, Candy, Lollipop, Dango in pink, white and green, and Fish Cake with its pink swirl, the narutomaki that floats on a bowl of ramen. Dessert & Sweets Emoji and Sushi & Asian Food Emoji have the rest of the menu.
Then the things. For beauty, Lipstick, Nail Polish and Kiss Mark; the pink parts of the body, Mouth, Tongue, Biting Lip, Brain and Lungs; Adhesive Bandage, Soap and Lotion Bottle for a self-care post. To wear: Ballet Shoes, Flat Shoe, Woman's Clothes, Bikini, One-Piece Swimsuit and Sari, with Purse and Clutch Bag to carry. And the pink signs: Love Hotel, Women's Room, Female Sign, the pink, blue and white Transgender Flag and a pair of Admission Tickets.
One caution: emoji colours belong to the platform, not to Unicode. Apple, Google, Samsung and WhatsApp each draw their own set, so an emoji that is pink on an iPhone can be red, purple or green somewhere else. Nearly everything on this page shows pink on an iPhone and on most other phones; a few, such as and , change shade from platform to platform, and things that are pink only on one platform, like the Dress, were left out.
