Heart Decoration

A heart printed on a rounded square tile, like a sticker or app badge. The official name, heart decoration, says it all: this is a heart dressed up, not a heart with a special message. There is no arrow, ribbon or sparkle to shift its meaning towards crushes, gifts or excitement. It simply says love, warmth or liking, the way a heart drawn on a notebook does.

Because it looks like a badge or a button, 💟 does a lot of decorating. It turns up as a bullet in lists of favourites, framing a username, or in a string of hearts in a profile where the writer wants variety. Sent on its own in a chat it is a heart like any other, chosen because the sender liked the look of it or because their keyboard offered it first.

It is one of the oldest emoji. Before Unicode, the shared text standard, took emoji in, each Japanese phone network had its own set, and a 2009 table built to match them up links this icon to DoCoMo's "Cute", KDDI's "heart" and SoftBank's "Decoration 1": three companies, three names for one little framed heart. Unicode kept the decorative idea in the name.

Someone sent me 💟 — friendly or romantic?

Either; the frame does not tell you, the rest of the message does. A 💟 after "thanks for today!" is friendly warmth. A 💟 after "miss you" at midnight is as romantic as any ❤️. Unlike 💘 or 💝, this heart carries no built-in story, so read the words, the sender and your history with them, exactly as you would for a red heart.

If you are the sender, know that 💟 lands as slightly playful and ornamental rather than solemn. For a serious declaration most people reach for ❤️; for a cute, low-pressure heart that is not the standard one, 💟 does the job. One thing to watch: since it looks purple on most screens, readers may take it for 💜, which in some circles has its own colour-coded meanings, such as fan colours or supporting a cause.
