Popcorn

A snack, a movie, or a front-row seat to someone else's drama.

Literally, 🍿 is popcorn: corn kernels that burst into fluffy white puffs when heated, served in the red-and-white striped box or bucket of American movie theatres. That picture is why the emoji stands for cinema plans, streaming nights, a series binge or a game on TV, and it fits any snack-and-screen evening without a cinema in sight.

The second meaning borrows the cinema seat. Under an argument in the comments, a public feud between famous people, or a group chat that is getting heated, 🍿 is the one-glyph version of "grab the popcorn" or "this is going to be good." The sender casts themselves as the audience: settled in, snack in hand, waiting to see what happens next. The joke is that the conversation has turned into a show worth watching. Several in a row, 🍿🍿🍿, means the show looks like a long one.

Popcorn itself varies by country, which is worth knowing if you use the emoji for food. In the United States it is usually salted and buttered; British cinemas sell sweet and salted side by side; in much of Germany the default is sweet. The emoji shows none of that, so a message about "popcorn" may mean a different snack from the one you picture.

Why did they send popcorn?

They're following the action, not necessarily taking your side.

Under something you posted, 🍿 means your situation has become entertaining to watch. From a friend during a dull work dispute that is fond teasing; from a stranger under a fight you are in, it is closer to heckling. Either way it is not advice, comfort or agreement, so don't read it as any of those.

Before sending it yourself, weigh the stakes. Playful gossip, a celebrity spat or a friend's long saga about a bad date suits the joke. Someone's breakup, illness, job loss or a real conflict with real harm does not: there, 🍿 reads as enjoying their pain, and it is one of the easier emoji to regret.
