Film projector

Movies being shown: cinema, movie night, a screening or a finished film. Someone posting 📽️ is pointing at a film as a thing to watch, not at the act of making it. You'll see it on movie-night invitations, cinema check-ins, film-club announcements, reviews, "now playing" captions and posts sharing a finished video or short film.

The machine itself is worth a word, because many people today have never seen one. A film projector takes a long strip of film on a reel, winds it past a bright lamp one frame at a time, and throws the enlarged picture onto a screen; the film then winds onto a second reel. That is what the emoji draws: a boxy body, a lens pointing forward and two round reels on top. Cinemas ran movies this way for about a century, and families used smaller ones at home before video. The emoji keeps that look, so it carries a nostalgic, classic-cinema feel even when the film in question is brand new.

The one mistake worth avoiding: 📽️ is not a camera. 🎥 films the scene; 📽️ plays the result back. If you're announcing a shoot or saying you're recording, 🎥 is the one you want.

What does it mean when someone sends you 📽️?

Usually an invitation or a pointer: let's watch something, or here's a film. On its own it is a label rather than a feeling, so read the words around it. It has no known hidden or rude meaning, so it's safe to send to just about anyone.
