It's the mic for live performance: singing, rapping, speaking. You send 🎤 when someone's about to perform out loud: karaoke plans, a freestyle clip, stand-up night, a big speech. The handheld shape sells stage energy: you hold it, you move with it, and at the end you might drop it.

That last move is the mic drop. American comedians and rappers were dropping the mic as a showy final-word gesture by the 1980s, and by 2012 it was an internet meme. The emoji inherited both jobs: the stage and the final word.

What does it mean when someone sends you 🎤?

A dare to sing, or applause for what you said. Alone after your hot take, it's a pocket mic drop: you said it, nothing to add. In a Friday-night group chat it's simpler: karaoke, tonight, you're coming. The mic drop isn't always sincere, though: by 2017 it covered praise and also irony and mockery, so check whether you're being cheered or teased.

Is 🎤 the same as 🎙️ studio microphone?

No: one performs, the other records. 🎤 is the handheld stage mic for karaoke, rap and stand-up. 🎙️ is the studio mic on a stand for podcasts, interviews and broadcast. If you're making noise live, pick 🎤. If you're bottling it, pick 🎙️.
